* Tornado reported to have struck Mall of the Mainland in Texas City. Building evacuated as per concerns of structural integrity after a partial roof collapse (as per Chron.com).
* And Midland has received 4-6 inches of snow from this storm thus far. Their official NWS total for the season is up to 14.4 inches...and counting. That's the new seasonal record...on Jan. 9th no less.
I know a guy who lives in Odessa. He said he received 7 inches of snow in his yard since it started at 7am this morning. He said it was above freezing most of the day, so more "slushy" and messy than the one they had last month he said.

That is phenomenal for a place that doesn't have that many big ticket snow totals. Looking at radar returns, I say they might push for a foot!
Edit: Where is natlib and those snow pictures from san angelo?!
Ntxw.....I will definitely post some pictures after sunrise tomorrow. Its a heavy wet snow that is causing power outages, but it is a beautiful sight in the trees.

You have 1" more than a friend of mine has received in a NE Buffalo suburb this winter.

0zGFS Ensembles showing some pretty impressive negative 850mb Temperatures Anomalies by Monday Jan 16 in NW Canada. By the looks of it cold air build up is a pretty safe bet..

Re: Texas Winter 2011-2012...
I see that those overnight model runs got everyone real excited around here.
Yeah, I know ... I know. Winter weather fans who are faint of heart should not look at the 0z operational runs of the Euro or GFS or Canadian. Our little MLK Day Weekend Snow Surprise for Texas has vanished from the models like LSU national title hopes.
If it is of any hope to you, I still believe the models are having great difficulty beyond a 3-4 day range. For example, the high temps here in AUS for Thursday are now progged after the frontal passage to be in the upper 40s. Yesterday the thought for Thursday was low 50s. Late Sunday, the thought was mid to upper 50s. And we're talking about a front with not a lot of snow cover to our north.
So you may be thinking "Portastorm, how much Grey Goose are you swilling over there?!" I say "none" and "don't jump off the ledge, we still have a good 7-8 weeks left of opportunity."

The snow stuck to everything last night......but it has already started melting during the night. Still a beautiful sight though!

Re: Texas Winter 2011-2012...
Today's blog from Larry Cosgrove:
A blast of Arctic air (not extreme) will reach Houston late on January 11, and the Thursday/Friday period should feel like winter [with highs in the 40s and 50s]. But the truly harsh temperature drops are slated for the Midwest and Northeast, and not Texas. ... Incidentally, I should mention that most of the longer term models and ensemble packages (exception: the operational GFS scheme) rebuild the circumpolar vortex over Alaska in about 10 days. If so, mostly milder conditions are to be expected for the entire lower 48 states for the remainder of January. The sad reality for winter weather enthusiasts in Texas and the rest of the nation is that unless a strong high-latitude blocking ridge emerges (and soon), chances for meaningful displays of cold, ice and snow will be on the downturn.

As an LSU fan and a fan of winter weather, that quote above makes for a very gloomy morning.
May have to make a trip down to the PWC soon for some counseling and polar-vortex medicine.

Looks like this go around of wet weather may be winding down in Texas.
Good rains yesterday and overnight will make an additional dent into the drought here.
Never thought we would see so much rain here in North Texas during a La Nina winter.
Just imagine if we could get a little cold air down here.

I agree. We need something!!!! Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh! Until then we will have to live vicariously through other posters snow pics and winter stories from years past. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact people in West Texas got to see snow. Midland close to 20 inches is an amazing stat considering the east and midwest are nowhere close to that total. This winter blows the mind. Here's hoping for a mild summer and a brutal 2012-2013!

I will take a cold summer. I mean never getting above 95 the whole summer. The last two have been brutal.

Re: Texas Winter 2011-2012...
12Z GFS is about 18 hours faster than the 00Z Euro with the passage of the next upper-level trof/low next Monday evening across northeast TX. This is about 6 hours faster than the 06Z GFS. No winter precip with this feature, however. The next snow for Texas (according to the 12Z GFS) would be in the northwestern panhandle on the 24th in the wake of a Canadian cold front.
