Jonathan's Videos

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Mon Feb 13, 2012 11:20 pm

My studio at Florida State began taping again two weeks ago, below is my own Valentine's Day Weathercast.

Also of special note is that our studio is making the switch from WSI to WeatherCentral 3D: Live Fusion graphics in a couple of weeks. This is a jump in technology from the 1980s to 2012, and we will be broadcasting on Tallahassee area TV again with the new graphics around March 12th. We may be broadcasting over livestream before the end of this month.

For now though, check out the video below. I would love comments and critiques!

We were is storm mode for approximately nine hours today due to the severe weather this afternoon. For those of you that are friends with me on facebook, I posted numerous updates starting around 7pm and ending around 12:30 this evening on the severe weather. This was my first prolonged studio event and greatly appreciated experience. Feel free to comment and critique the videos.

I am going to try to put them all into one bundle before I post them on youtube, which may not happen until Spring Break.

Good evening everyone!

We had a very busy day on Friday at 4FSU. We had severe weather blow through early afternoon and proceeded to make the switch over to Weather Central by early evening. This order of events allowed for a unique opportunity to do a before and after comparison from one graphics system to the next within hours of each other.

The first video is my last video with the old graphics system during a 4FSU weather update during a severe thunderstorm: http://youtu.be/v1OxtmIQl9k
The second video is my first video with the new system: http://youtu.be/NRMXTHUJEwA

Hi Jonathan. I make quite a few videos in front of a green screen and did notice a few things. First of all, you generally look pretty good. You're moving well. But there are two issues I noticed:

1. When pointing to something on the map you're not making it believable as you're looking straight ahead 2-3 feet above where your hand is pointing. It's obvious you're looking at a monitor vs something on the map. To give the illusion that there really is a map behind you, glance down at your hand when you're pointing at something. That will make the audience believe that the map is really there (vs. just a green screen).

2. You need to stand a bit farther away from the green wall. Your arm shadow is appearing on the wall when you point at something. There's no way that lighting can eliminate the shadow and preserve the effect of standing in front of a map if you're that close to the wall. We have a box on the floor that we stand in. It's about 2 1/2 to 3 feet from the green wall. It prevents us from putting our arms anywhere close to the wall.

Now most people probably wouldn't notice those 2 things above, but someone who might be considering you for a job in broadcasting certainly would notice.

Thank you so much! This is the feedback that I want. On point two, we actually have a small table on the ground so that we don't go too far forward because a few of the student mets in the studio were going too far away from the wall. All of us have gotten closer to the wall now that we have MagicTRAK, which is quite picky with pointing. I'll keep this in mind when I get back to the studio after spring break!
