Texas Winter 2011-2012...

New GFS ensembles have Dallas area 5-10F below normal next week. No freeze. The air in western Canada just isn't forecast to be THAT cold compared to earlier this winter. And the snow pack is even less than a month ago. GFS operational says Dallas MIGHT see a very light freeze on March 1st. Not particularly extreme. After all, it IS February.

March is only 9 days away now. Don't look for any March surprise this year as the pattern just isn't there and there's no snow pack up north. Getting close to time for some 80s to begin showing up in SE TX.

You honestly believe these models are going to be able to handle a cold dense air mass that's forecast to be upwards of 25-30F below normal?? They're vastly underestimating the southward push of that air mass....they do it every year.

Even 25-30F below normal isn't as cold as it would be a month ago (-15F to -25F in NW Canada predicted by Euro/GFS next week). "Normal" temps are steadily rising now. With no snow pack, I wouldn't be surprised if the Dallas area got a freeze out of it. Probably not Houston, though. Euro and GFS, the models that build the colder air in Canada do not have freezing temps down to Dallas next week, by the way. These models have actually been too cold in the longer term all winter, so I don't expect next week will be any different.

Boy, Wxman57 has been "campaigning" hard today about why his "Death to Winter" plan will come true.

But it is 2012, a year when lots of things are said that will not come true!!!

You know, it is kinda hard to keep interest and activity up in a forum when:

1) There's not been much "winter" to speak of all season; and,

2) Every time the models give us some hope, wxman57 (aka Heat Miser) melts our snowflakes of hope into rain, or uses his blowdryer of meteorological reason to warm up any model-progged Polar airmass.

While he'll be the first to admit to his warm bias, Heat Miser is right a lot more than he's wrong. Time is nearly running out for us winter weather fans. At least we know that the 2012-13 winter is a lot more likely to be better than this sorry excuse of a season.

I don't know Texas Snowman. He usually doesn't log on to the forum in the evenings unless there's something on the horizon or something to discuss. We may not "feel the heat" about those JB tweets until tomorrow morning.

The 12z GFS and Euro definitely show a sharp contrast in airmasses down the road. Unfortunately we're on the wrong side!

If 2012 goes from La Nina right to now El Nino by the Fall, winters tend to be very cold and snowy. The last time that happened was 2009. 2009-2010 Winters was cold and snowy. Other years that went La Nina to El Nino.

Yes, how unfortunate it is that the models don't show any really cold air down here in Texas over the next few weeks (and likely for the rest of winter). We'll all just have to enjoy the mild to warm weather as we head toward the warm to hot weather of spring and summer.

I agree. I am done. No more. Bring on Spring, baseball, thunderstorms, drylines, the Byron Nelson, warm days, fertilizer, Amdro, lawnmowers, weedeaters, rose buds, green grass, and the hope of a brutal 2012-2013. Like at Panchos, I am raising the flag. Surrender is in the air. This last tease was it. No more false hope. This winter was utter crap! IF summer can be a little cooler and wetter that would be a huge bonus. Can't handle another summer like last year. Just can't. Well fellow Storm2kers, it was still fun learning from everyone even though not much happened. Looking forward to a MUCH better winter next year!!!

I'm holding on (to the slimmest of hopes) for ONE round of winter mischief in the Red River Valley through March 20th.

Then I'll come to my senses, concede the match to Heat Miser, and start plotting revenge next winter when he'll have an entire winter season with no good bike riding weather!

Winter is done for us here in Texas, forecast highs here in DFW call for 80 by Thursday and upper 50's Friday with the next front. But as for any major cold snaps, chance of sleet/snow, you will have to wait till next season.
