Days off Offered by your Employer

I'm just wondering if this is another trend that's happening with employers all over. I feel like I really can't take a day off, even holidays I used to have automatically.

My day job hasn't changed (PTO), however during my review for my night job they told me that I was out last year 9 times for being sick....now they have a policy that if you have a doctor's appt, you can take sick time for it, which I did when I had to take hubby to the dr and he goes at least 5 times a year. I was told that you can be out sick 4 times a year and I questioned them why do you have so much sick time carryover yet you can get in trouble for being out sick more than 4 times in a year??? I did not want to use my vacation time as that is set up different. Also if you carryover 155 hours of sick time, anything over that you can either put in an extended sick time bank or have it paid to you in a check at 50cents on the dollar which I did. (heck the night job is part time and I get better benefits than the day job!)

The standard is if you are out more than 3 days in a row you have to have a doctors note, which is understandable.

I still never got an answer why so much sick time yet so little vacation time, granted I should not complain as everyone else does PTO (which I hate)but why have so much if you can't take it???

When the company I work for was aquired a couple of years ago we went back to sick/vacation time instead of PTO. Since I'm hardly ever sick and refuse to call in sick just to take a day, I've lost 9 days off a year...

No changes in many years with the exception that we're now able to carry over up to 5 vacation days to the next year. Long-time employees (10+ yrs) get 21 vacation days, 1 floating holiday, and 8 holidays off per year. I don't know what sick time amounts to as I don't get sick. But I think we have 9-10 days sick time or similar.

I've been on PTO with this job and my previous one. I didn't mind it and understood the need for the casino industry. They're open 24/7 and people work on holidays, which tend to be very busy. Where I work now, we are in our 2nd year since the opening but where my prior company would close the Administrative offices for a holiday, here they don't. This time of the year for accountants is horrible, but we still got the holidays off. Now we can't even take them because we're still so damn busy.

I was just wondering if because of the way companies have cut back so much due to the economy that this may be becoming the new "normal".

Angelwing - sometimes companies assign points to the number of call outs you have, regardless of the fact that you may have more days than the points allow. It always seems like it penalizes the people that shouldn't be penalized instead of the other way around. Dishonest people figure out how a system works and then finds ways of getting around them.
