Anyone think the focus is going to shift from the leftover convection in
the southern GOM to what is approaching the channel between Cuba and
Yucatan? Looks ominous to me.

Yes, the Flood Watches that have been issued for Florida are in reponse to this potential tropical development in the Yucatan Channel. The activity is forecast to move toward the Sunshine State this week.
The general steering pattern from the northwestern Caribbean, Yucatan Channel and eastern Gulf of Mexico is toward Florida and up the east coast; thus Hurricane Fabian is still expected to make more of a northerly turn in the next day or two.
