The above is a good example of how higher rain rates can spike up the SFMR surface wind rates. Notice the flight level winds are all within 3 knots (the 3 digits to the left of the ones in red) (37 to 40). Notice the SFMR winds (in red), however, jump from the 26 to 28 range up to 38. The rain rates (in blue) also jump from the 5 range up to 15 as recon passes through a pretty strong shower/storm. The higher rain rates caused the sensor to read higher surface winds than are really there.

74 knot flight level winds? Please tell me that is just a transient feature! Quite an area of 60 to 70 knot winds at flight level.

That comes out to about what on the surface? Using a 0.8 reduction would be 60 knots. If it develops convection over that area, those winds will really get down to the surface.
