What exactly is a TUTT
I realize that a TUTT is a type of upper level trough. But I cant seem to find any information on how they form, all i can find is the one sentence on the web that says " TUTTs are different from mid-latitude troughs in the sense that they are maintained by subsidence warming near the tropopause which balances radiational cooling" which is hardly informative on the dynamics involved. Can someone shed some light on the dynamics of TUTTs?

Tropical Upper Tropospheric Troughs (TUTTs)
The way for you to learn is to search through the scholarly literature to get the best answer to your question. Use Google Scholar and enter in the search term above. You might even include "the dynamics of Tropical Upper Tropospheric Troughs" and I am sure you will find dozens of articles written on this phenomenon. Good luck!!!

The subtropical laditudes can extend as far north as 40N, and even to a greater degree in Europe where the Mediterranean moderates the climate. The expanse of it is mostly dictated by sea surface temperatures.

Yes but then it should be called a STUTT or SUTTRiptide wrote:abajan wrote:I haven't researched TUTTs but I wonder why "Tropical" is in their name because they seem to be mostly in the temperate latitudes (well at least, just skirting the tropics).

Re: What exactly is a TUTT
I posted a link to TUTTs early this summer from my online tropical course at Penn State.
