Josh very close to the west or even over the island but still there is some space left to turn more east and not affect Bermuda with the quadrant most destructive but the window is closing in less than 2-3 hours.

Fabian just wobbled a little west of due north recently, and IMO, Bermuda will unfortunately be getting the NE quadrant of a still powerful Category 3 hurricane ...

Fabian continues to move just west of due north, and if this can continue...Bermuda just maybe, and hopefully...the eyewall may just miss Bermuda ...

Bermuda is getting the very worse part of this hurricane.....late report from NHC is Bermuda harbor reporting sustained winds of 86 mph, gusting to 100 mph at 1:30 p.m. EST.

I expect to see gusts in excess of 140 mph measured on Bermuda....if the anemometers there aren't destroyed first.

What's worse is that the tropical storm force winds extend 230 miles out from the center, and the hurricane force winds now extend 110 miles from the center... The effects are going to last longer with the expansion of the wind field. And even worse, Bermuda may not get the eye itself ...

Here's the latest screen shot showing Bermuda with a 62kt wind gusting 88kts. Note that as of 2:16pm EDT, Bermuda was in the outer eyewall and had YET to measure sustained hurricane-force winds. I don't think hurricane force winds extend 110 miles from the center. That's WAY outside the CDO.

Finally at 1853Z (2:53pm EDT), Bermuda has hurricane-force winds of 69 kts gusting 89kts:

Wxman57, the wind field was from the 2pm advisory from NHC. Of course, land interaction (and the friction) almost always cuts down on the wind due to frictional forces ...

Latest Obs....

SE 69 kts - 89 kts (80 mph, gusts to 103 mph)

Hurricane

#36 Postby wxman57 » Fri Sep 05, 2003 2:32 pm

I certainly understand the effects of frictional wind reduction, but in my opinion the hurricane wind field was greatly overestimated. Take a look at that ship north of Bermuda about 80-90 miles. Only 30-40kt winds. Hurricane force winds are going to be confined to the CDO not the spiral bands.

Oh, and by the way, here's the latest:

Poor Bermuda is just getting hammered. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 150mph gust.

Not sure if anyone posted this or not...from bermudaonion.com

12:32pm - The **** is now starting to hit the fan. I've just taken what will be my last shots from outdoors. I'm 180lbs, and I cannot stand still, much less hold a camera! The waves are REALLY picking up, and the ones that crash are sending salt spray everywhere. The water you see in these shots is not from rain, but waves that have crashed and are spraying up over the coastline.

Watford Bridge ferry dock is already getting swamped with waves! I mean the water is literally crash up and over the dock. Whenever the eye of a storm goes over you, there is a huge increase in the water tide (I'd say an easy 5-6ft). Around the time that Fabian hits, the natural tide will actually be at its high point. Given this I expect the natural height of the water to be well above the dock and easily hitting the main road.

I've finished all my preparations now. So, it's time to get a shower - who knows the next time I'll get to do that!

Here's a close-up of Bermuda in the eastern eyewall of Fabian. Ok, so Bermuda isn't REALLY triangular-shaped, but you get the idea.
