Evening thoughts on Fabian and Henri

#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Fri Sep 05, 2003 8:32 pm

Fabian will now go out to sea, probably south of newfoundland, though they should still monitor the situation

Henri is a bit more complicated as there is a chance of some subtrop development, especially as indicated by the ukmet, which intensifies this as an asymetric warm core system over the Gulfstream

Fabian is a weakening hurricane heading out to sea over cooler waters soon. Bye, Fabian!

Henri is a weak WEAK TD. Just a low-level swirl of clouds. Recon reports 29 kt FL wind - that's about 20 kts at the surface MAX. Please show me those 50 mph winds, NHC. Not a single heavy shower offshore now.

The only thing to watch out for is that upper low approaching what's left of Henri and causing a flare-up of thunderstorms before the center moves ashore.

Agreed, there are no 50 m.p.h. winds any more with Henri. Even 40 is a liberal estimate.

I am a little concerned about a late flare-up just before the center comes on shore due to the UL, though nothing that will intensify this system

Yeah, I just told the forecaster at work to beware of a flare--up as the upper low approaches. We've seen that the SE quadrant of an upper low can enhance convection in tropical systems (Bill, Claudette, Grace....). But even if such a flare-up should occur, I don't think it could make Henri a TS before landfall.

Henri definitely looks at least subtropical now, if not totally ET. That ULL really cut its heart out. Great news for you Floridians.

Yeah, NHC should seriously considering not retiring but blackballing the name Henri for two reasons....
1) It's been such a pitiful performer
2) but more importantly it's "French"

NHC/TPC, get rid of all the Lame Names

#12 Postby Anonymous » Fri Sep 05, 2003 10:44 pm

I think the National Hurricane Center should cut bait on all these Lame names they've been using for tropical cyclones. Definitely NO MORE French names. Get some decent names out there for the 2004 season. It's kinda too late to change the names for this year though.

It's too late to change the names of tropical cyclones for the next six years.
