I doubt this makes Cat 1....if it does, it barely does, and really is no different then a strong TS.

Water Vapor imagery tells the tale, well, part of the tale anyway:

Will any of the rain from this system reach the heartland? The farmers need rain so badly....

As the death toll of Isaac is now over 20, will it be a candidate for name retirement? Has a tropical storm, as opposed to a hurricane, ever had its name retired in the past?

It just goes to show, you never can tell just with the 'look' of a storm.

If you showed 10 random people on the street the image below, and asked if it was a hurricane, I guarantee 9 or 10 out of 10 would have said 'yes'.

there were some posts about this system and cape a day or two ago with a figure of 3000 being high...here is something to chew on in sofla this afternoon..

THE 12Z SOUNDING THIS MORNING SHOWED A PWAT OF ALMOST 2.4 INCHES.
A CONSERVATIVE TEMPERATURE OF 88 DEGREES AND DEWPOINT OF 76 SHOWS
OVER 4000 J/KG OF CAPE THIS AFTERNOON. SO BUMPED UP THE THREAT FOR
SEVERE STORMS THIS AFTERNOON...WITH THE MAIN THREAT BEING
DOWNBURSTS DUE TO WATER LOADING.

Do you think all of the dry air is a result from the epic drought in the midwest? Usually it is wetter up that way? I believe we combine that with, and I know people argue this, but all of the rain we have had over the last 4 weeks (huge amounts around 40 inches) cooling the gulf, as well as a lot more cloud cover keeping the water cooler. I know for a fact the water is a lot cooler this year than when we have had big hurricanes.

Well I guess it's time to buckle up, weather radio just went off for the first time placing me on Tornado watch. Just has a pretty heavy squall come through with heavy rain and some pretty stout winds.

The combo of storm surge and massive amounts of rain make things even worse. Especially when the soil is already saturated.[/quote]

So that wold take me back to my original question then. If rain stays diminished on the north side, will the overall damage be potentially reduced since it won't have that combo punch on the north side and the south side should push surge offshore?

I am starting to wonder if the rain will even reach as far north as I am (Baton Rouge) with everything on the southern side of the storm and models showing this hugging the coast. We may just have a rather gusty 24 hour period with some spotty showers. Not complaining, but not what I was expecting 2-3 days ago, at all.

looks like the Eastern side of the storm is moistening up just a bit...perhaps some rain and wind might make it to shore in the western florida panhandle!

I agree! Bring on 2013,
2012 just doesn't have what it take to develop hurricanes...Way too much dry air
out there..oh well, every year is a different year.

Depends on how it tracks. If it stays a little left, it'll be right over us, and we'll definitely get a long period of rain and TS winds.

Storms rotate. It's not going to all stay on the southern side.
