Evacuation orders exist for a reason, and it isn't to make people spend money and have them take joyrides across the state.[/quote]
Slightly off-topic -
just want to add this and then I'm done. For the past few days I've been in an absolute funk. Really desparing - the reason being, the tragically NASTY comments made by my fellow Houstonians regarding possible evacuees coming from Nola and the rest of the state. These comments have been made on FB boards, news boards, and even coming from some friends of mine. I am a FIRM believer in evacuations and when there's a disaster - we are ALL brothers and sisters - and we should all welcome them with open arms. We all come from different places, different economic levels, different cultures, etc. And to think, "well, we didn't get enough THANKS in return, and these PEOPLE didn't RESPECT us" is just too unrealistic.
That being said - if local governments (ie Harris County in Texas), turn away evacuees - it just makes everything so much more difficult.
Right now, I have never been so ashamed to be a Houstonia or a Texan.

I found this from 2006 on CNN..."Across Houston, there have been a series of high-profile crimes involving Katrina evacuees. Houston police say evacuees have been victims or suspects in about 20 percent of the city's homicides, more than double their percentage in the population. This is leading to a feeling among some Houstonians that perhaps the evacuees are wearing out their welcome."
