The Bermuda Weather Service's last report relayed on their website was 105 knots (119 mph) with a peak gust to 130 kts (150 mph) ...

About what I expected based on the recon reports of 115 kts at flight level just before landfall....equating to 104 kts at the surface sustained....with higher gusts.

It won't be as bad as Andrew or Hugo -- but will be a disaster...with widespread damage similar IMO to Frederic and Opal.

As far as I've found so far, this may be the worst Bermuda has ever felt in the hurricane. I saw in 1948 that a Category 4 brushed the island nation but don't know what kind of effects Bermuda felt from that storm. The last direct strike was a Category 1 Hurricane Arlene in 1963.

Mike, the October 1948 hurricane did a lot of damage on Bermuda.....I read about it in some research many years ago. Winds were over 120 mph on the island, and boats were tossed and destroyed by the hundreds....along with many structures.

IMO Fabian is the most intense hurricane to make a direct hit on Bermuda since 1948....and possibly since before 1900.

Thanks again, Perry, for the hurricane historical lesson. Based on what I saw and I just uploaded a historical track map from the Weather Underground and it definitely shows that Bermuda doesn't get hit very often and could be the most intense modern day storm to impact the 21 square mile island.
