Does anyone think we'll have a Category 5 cane this year
It's been about 5 years since we've had a Category 5 storm to track in the Atlantic (Hurricane Felix 2007), and just over 2 years since the last one in the eastern Pacific (Hurricane Celia 2010). So, we're in the second year of being without any Category 5 hurricanes - does anyone think that this will be the year we track a Category 5 hurricane? Even if it's a 160 mph Category 5, still let us know! I'll be glad if some people say yes, especially if they think it's going to be in the eastern Pacific, because it'll replace all the dead inactivity there. I'll only be happy if someone says it's going to be in the Atlantic, if they also think it's going to stay AWAY from land. Enough land has already been affected by the 2012 ATL season!

I edited to get out hurricane and put cane to add the r to the word year as it was not completed due to lack of space.

I certainly hope not, unless it is a fish.

The way things have been in the Atlantic this year I don't see it happening there. This year there always seems to be something to keep these storms from strengthening to that level. Dry air, shear, etc. The Caribbean hasn't even been that favorable and that is usually where the monsters form.
That is just my opinion however.

If at Cat 5 will happen, the Eastern Pacific will get it. The Atlantic probably won't. We've already had three hurricanes - one which was in June, up north, and out of nowhere. Ernesto didn't have much time to strengthen, and also, Gordon waas very close to major hurricane status but didn't get it (unless it did when the season is analyzed). Isaac hasn't even reached hurricane status yet.
I'm personally waiting for a MAJOR hurricane to happen, but not a Cat 5.

Seems unlikely to me. The conditions for a Cat 5 to form haven't been present in the past few years, what with the dry air all around, low atmospheric instability and TUTT's flying around the deep tropics. It takes an ideal setup for a Cat 5 to form, and even in seasons like 2008 and 2010 which had Gustav and Igor both peaking at 155 MPH those conditions weren't present. So all things considered, based on what we've seen from the season so far, I'm going to say no.

I'm going to say doubtful. The ingredients just don't seem to be there. Last few years, if it's not one thing with these storms, it's another.

I find it amusing when people want a category 5 fish hurricane in the Atlantic, it never happens. The official only CAT5 storm not to hit landmass which was Hurricane Dog probably wasn't one too based on some of the things I've read. Once the reanalysis project gets to that year which should be soon, it may not hold that title anymore. Your second point is half correct but there hasn't been any huge disasters yet so no

Do I think it will happen? According to my Equilibrium theory, it should happen but the conditions in the Atlantic have been nothing but crap so far. This can only mean 2013 will be that much more incredible.

I'll go with a resounding "no". I would think that the best chances for such to occur this year would be deep in the S.W. Caribbean and even then my guess is that this would occur around or after late Sept. However, given the anticipated earlier end to the Atlantic Season due to El Nino, I would be less inclined to anticipate this to occur and imagine that the Westerlies will have started to really kick in somewhere in/by early October.

I don't think we will see a Cat 5 tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Basin this season. As we have seen too often this season, SAL, TUTTs and shear has really caused many systems to struggle to get their act together this season.
I think it is still possible that we can see a major hurricane to form, more likely in the Western Caribbean I feel should that happen. One very interesting fact that so far this season two hurricanes, Chris and Gordon, didn't really spin up until they were well up into the North Atlantic. It has been that kind of year.

NEVER, EVER SAY NEVER in the tropics and weather in general, and most importantly, with life itself!!

Not likely, but you never know.

I will say no. And I will go out on a limb and say that this will be the seventh consecutive year without a major hurricane touching US soil (not an official forecast).

Especially after what happened with Ernesto and Isaac. We can't even get a major over open water; much less at landfall.
