From AllisonHouse fb page 45 minutes ago.
GOES-Update: GOES-13 (the current GOES-East) may be dead. GOES-14 is now online and data from it will flow to our users as of 17:45Z (12:45 PM CDT). Images should resume momentarily.
Also:
GOES-13 Anomaly: GOES-13 services (DCS, EMWIN, SARSAT) are unaffected and continue to operate normally.
Glad to see that! The issue is localized to just the imagery portion. SARSAT is very critical in SAR (Search And Rescue/Recovery) missions!

Definitely wasn't supposed to happen. An abnormality appeared in the imaging equipment, which resulted in them shutting down, much like a surge protector "pops" off when there is a surge. They don't want to even try to take the equipment out of safe mode without finding out what is causing the issue, as it could cause [further] damage. Until they can fix that (assuming they even can, in the first place) and bring the equipment back online, we cannot truly assess the extent of any damage to the sensors that may have occurred. However, in sections of the satellite that do not deal with imagery, those pieces of equipment are still working normally.

Thanks for the info. I guess I thought they moved it. That may be something done in time if they can't fix 13, but not yet. Understood.

GOES-14 is at 105W now, not 90W. No plan to move it until they determine that GOES-13 is dead for good.

Engineers looking into cause of Goes-13 outage
A critical weather satellite assigned to monitor the East Coast of the United States and active hurricane zones in the Atlantic Ocean is out of commission, and NOAA officials are not sure when the spacecraft could be returned to service.
The GOES 13 satellite, stationed over the equator at 75 degrees west longitude, began showing noise in imaging and sounding data about two weeks ago.The satellite's imager and sounder instruments were placed in standby mode Sunday.
Engineers rushed the GOES 14 spare satellite into duty to cover the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and much of the U.S. East Coast.
John Leslie, a NOAA spokesperson, said Tuesday there was no decision yet to transfer GOES 14 from a storage location at 105 degrees west to GOES 13's location further east.

Wow - I knew Goes-13 went out, but I didn't realize they had not updated the feeds to my favorite site until today:

Yeah...apparently the feeds are coming in differently from GOES 14 (despite using GOES 13's lines), and I guess they've been having coding issues in getting that information processed and put out to their site. Still says they are working on it.

Re: GOES-13 out of service - GOES 14 taking over East coverage
Good news here with this update as Goes 14 will be positioned more eastward.
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/SATS/MESS/MSG2751118.01.txt
Subject: Administrative: GOES-14 East Drift Start Maneuver is
--20cf3074b92014ff7d04cafd75b5
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1
Topic: GOES-14 East Drift Start Maneuver is scheduled for October
1, 2012
Date/Time Issued: October 1, 2012 1110 UTC
Product(s) or Data Impacted: GOES-14 Imager and Sounder Data
Date/Time of Initial Impact: October 1, 2012 1545 UTC
Date/Time of Expected End: October 1, 2012 1609 UTC (maneuver);
Drift will
continue eastward at 0.90 degrees per day
Length of Outage: See table in detail.
Details/Specifics of Change: In order to support users with better data
during the ongoing GOES-13 anomaly recovery, a GOES-14 East Drift Start
Maneuver will be performed today, Monday, October 1, 2012, at 1545 UTC.
GOES-14 is currently positioned at 105 degrees west, and upon the
maneuver, the eastward longitudinal drift will be initiated.
GOES-14 will
drift 0.90 degrees per day to the East towards the location of
GOES-13 at
75 degrees West.
Final location of GOES-14 is dependent upon the ongoing recovery of
GOES-13. During this transition, direct readout users can continue to
receive GOES-14 data via the GOES-13 GVAR broadcast stream from
75 degrees
West, and will not have to repoint their antennas to GOES-14. GOES-13
imager and sounder remain out of service at this time.
Location of frame boundaries of the satellite scanning sectors will be
adjusted every Wednesday at the 1900 UTC housekeeping period.
This will
cause a one time shift in the image and sounding frames each Wednesday.
GINI and Remapper output will be monitored to ensure optimal
coverage of
the CONUS for users of AWIPS and of the SATEPSDIST servers within ESPC.
Image Navigation and Registration (INR) is expected to remain within
specification during this drift period. For NWS operations, during this
time period, RSO (Rapid Scan Operations) will be available. No SRSO
(Super
Rapid Scan Operations) will be available.
On October 1, 2012 the following schedule will be employed to support
maneuver operations:
GOES-14 East Drift Start Maneuver Schedule begins at 1545 UTC on
October 1,
2012.
>From 1545 UTC through 1606 UTC -- GOES-14 No Scan Operations
There will be no GOES-15 (GOES-West) Full Disk (30 minute) Imaging.
There will be no recovery schedule for this maneuver.
1609 UTC -- GOES-14 Routine Scan Operations Resume.
Please note: Since post-maneuver attitude performance is expected to be
nominal, a special recovery schedule is not required, and the
6-hour INR
(Image Navigation Registration) recovery period will be supported by
Routine schedule.

GOES-14 Outage
I just noticed that the current NOAA-14 Atlantic image photos are blank, and after checking this is the current update:
oops...
Frank2
ESPC is noticing some degradation on the GOES-14 EAST images. ESPC is currently investigating this situation.

To let you know that I merged the thread that you made to this one as is about the same topic. The bulletin above explains the outage that goes 14 is experiencing as they reposition it more eastward.

Re: GOES-13 out of service - GOES 14 repositioned more east
I have a couple of questions:
1. Is the GOES 14 superior to the GOES 13 and what aspects are different/better? Is it that one that went up a few years ago that provided a full-disc image that was bright and high-res?
2. Is there a map that shows the total area effected by the outage? I know the general area but I wouldn't mind a map.
3. Is there gaps in the imagery data because of this (past, not present)?
4. They don't want to even try to take the equipment out of safe mode without finding out what is causing the issue, as it could cause [further] damage. -- How is keeping the GOES on full mode risky for causing more damage? If there is a hardware malfunction I doubt a few pushes of buttons and alignments will magically fix the "damage" from space. Just keep it "on" and see if it goes away?
I didn't follow this problem but noticed some weird stuff on the east side of images. Sucks.

3. Yes there are gaps. There was roughly a 24 hour period where there were no images at all.
4. The reason why is that the issue is isolated strictly to a few parts. Only those few parts are shut down, everything else on GOES is running normally. You don't want to turn on the damaged parts, until more is known, because you are risking a surge ruining the entire spacecraft! That wouldn't be good for the Search and Rescue folks who use the SARSAT feature to pinpoint boats, aircraft, people, etc that are in trouble (assuming they have a SARSAT beacon, which most aircraft and vessels do nowadays).
GOES-13 Anomaly: GOES-13 services (DCS, EMWIN, SARSAT) are unaffected and continue to operate normally.
