I'm confused! Stewart and Roberts please let us know, is this the 2nd major of the season or not? However, the effects in Cuba will be the same if it's a strong cat 2 or a cat 3

These hurricanes like Sandy( insert any other system) are nasty and very dangerous and that is the downside of being interested in tropical weather.

The mountain terrain of Eastern Cuba should disrupt the core somewhat, but the cyclone is moving at 13 mph and Sandy will likely move off the northeast coast of Cuba by early afternoon. Sandy will weaken to a strong Cat 1 or Low end Cat 2 status this afternoon on its approach to the Bahamas, but the wind field will expand as time progresses.

The current Tropical Cyclone update states Sandy is currently a "strong category two hurricane" but when I mouse over "Sandy" on the NHC homepage she is listed as a Cat 3 ?

It's late and I must be missing something... I know all our thoughts are with the souls in eastern Cuba tonight. I am sure they are not really concerned with technicalities right about now.

Looking at the last hour of satellite images it seems the motion has gone from NNE to N and I expect a more NNW course after emerging from Cuba

If you look at an Atlantic wide shot or similar, the cloud shield on this thing is insane...over 1000 miles or something. This has been the case for a few days now but I have no idea if its part of the hurricane or not. I just read some posts on what I am talking about here.

Hurricane Sandy has indeed undergone Rapid Intensification like what we all knew was going to happen. It has an incredible CDO with an increasingly menacing eyewall form. The reds on AVN have completely encircled the eye with blacks surrounding 75% of it. As well, the eye is becoming more clear and defined so I expect it will make landfall as a major hurricane or even 105 knots (right now basically).

EDIT: The landfall update come out at the same time I wrote this. I saw 115 mph listed on the info panel but then they said strong category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds below all that. I think it came in at major strength.

They already updated it. It was 110mph at landfall.

TWC is at it again, they said it weakened to 110mph from 115 when it was really a correction on the NHC's part

Not sure why they didn't go with 115mph TBH. With the special advisory they upgraded to 110mph with 117kt FL and 91kt SFMR readings. Since then (before the 2am advisory) a 95kt SFMR reading was found--could have easily chosen to upgrade.
