I hear it is supposed to be the tallest building in the world when complete??

Seriously what were they thinking, leaving it up at all? Particularly at that height.

No, it's essentially complete at 1,005 feet. The crane is still there for putting the glass exterior up. As to why they left it up... no idea.

Hmm wonder what's going to happen to that crane when the real winds arrive.

according to the NYC stations, they have completed the 75th floor and its going up to 90.
one reporter on a NYC station said the wind at that height is probably 100 MPH!

Again, the building is more or less complete. It's being marketed as 90 floors to attract buyers, the top penthouse was reportedly sold for over 100 million. However, it is technically 75 floors. At 1,000 feet, the gusts up there are easily 100+, and they will only get stronger over the next few hours.

Folks,

Sorry I'm late to the game today. I took a quick look at the RR 19Z model sounding at Atlantic City...

https://www.e-education.psu.edu/worldof ... er/ACY.png

101 knots at 5400 feet...roughly 800 mb. Wow!

For the most part, there's high stability from just above the surface to 720 mb, limiting mixing to the surface, at least at 19Z. Man, look out Loretta if the static stability over New Jersey, southeast PA., etc decreases...the stage will be set for very high gusts.

Quiet all day, then as soon as I get home, winds really picked up! Probably close to 50 mph gusts now, certainly on the balcony at least.

Sandy’s Winds Intensify, Bringing Down Trees and Wires
UPDATE As Hurricane Sandy made landfall late today in New Jersey, its winds intensified along the Connecticut coastline, bringing down more trees and power lines. More than 7,000 Westport homes were in the dark.

A late morning high tide sent flood waters rushing into low-lying areas, including along the shoreline, on Main Street, Taylor Place, and Parker-Harding Plaza downtown.

A sand berm erected at Westport’s Compo Beach over the past two days partially gave way, creating quicksand-like conditions around what was left of the mounds.

At least four homes suffered tree damage. No injuries were reported

Does anyone have an update on water levels at Westport? One of my relatives is safely inland at Wilton, CT, but works in downtown Westport very close to the waterfront (Charles Street).

No news, but I am only a few towns down the coast in another southwestern Connecticut town. Earlier today the tidal surge caused a town pond that empies into Long Island Sound to rise higher than I have ever seen it. It flooded the entire park just as the rain began to sprinkle, long before the hurricane hit this area. Someone posted a video of the park on-line on the site of our local newspaper because he, also, couldn't believe it. The rain didn't cause the flooding; the tidal surge did. Now the town is considering relocating three of its Fire Departments to higher ground. I know Westport. I would bet that low lying areas there, like low lying areas here, are really flooded.

Hoping the waters recede SOON. A drainage ditch from NYC to the glades would take too long ; ).

I thought I'd update my earlier posting since I've been glued to the television and seen more relevant video footage. Downtown Westport is a mess. Although I was seeing video in real time at almost 10 PM when it was obviously quite dark, I could see deep water in the streets. And high tide won't be until midnight there.

In other, related, news, Governor Malloy had just issued orders that people is the western area of the Sound who had not evacuated and were trapped in their homes not leave their homes. He had told them to seek higher ground where they were, to go upstairs and onto the roof if necessary because it was going to get worse until after high tide at midnight. Then a newscaster came onto the local station with an emergency announcement that about a dozen streets in Stamford that had not previously been evacuated would have to be evacuated immediately. Apparently the new record water level at high tide will far surpass the previous record (of around 13 feet) not by going to 14 feet as expected, but by going to 17 1/2 feet. At least that was the latest thing reported. All I am doing is listening, not trying to tell you whether the newscasters are repeating accurate information!

I just thought you all might like to hear the latest evacuation order, whether the water rises to 14 feet or 15 or more! At least it shows that the Governor is alarmed.

State by state look. I believe the outages are outdated, though.

pressure seems to have bottomed out here at 966mb. this is north of harrisburg, pa.

can't report on winds or rain, both blew over and aren't working anymore.

still have power, we lost it for a half hour around sunset, not sure if we'll lose it again.

At midnight the winds and gusts REALLY ramped up and I estimate the strongest so far has been 67 Km/h in a gust. I think my power has a 55% chance of going out and the lights are slightly flickering.
