I think someone needs to revise that Graph to indicate heights higher than 10 feet ;-)

TWC keeps showing a graphic showing water levels leveling off, mostly, at the Battery for now...yet everything you guys post shows it steadily rising?

[I'd be willing to bet that this hasn't been "tropical" for a few days now. Of course, a 940mb extratropical gale center is still something to be reckoned with, but is it truly a hurricane in the strict warm-core sense? It certainly doesn't look like one in the satellite pictures, and hasn't for a few days.[/quote]

The cyclone had tropical characteristics this morning with a nice CDO (central dense overcast) over the core until early to mid afternoon when the transition began in earnest.

The surge (the green line above) has leveled off somewhat. But of course the tide is still rising.

There is definitely a difference for claim from designated tropical cyclones and flood insurance, etc. But I just cannot believe that the NHC would change their reporting for that reason.

WE ANTICIPATES THAT THE LAST NHC ADVISORY ON SANDY WILL BE ISSUED AT

ISSUED BETWEEN NOW AND THE 11 PM NHC ADVISORY. TO PROVIDE A
CONTINUOUS FLOW OF INFORMATION...NHC WILL ISSUE TROPICAL CYCLONE
UPDATES AT 7 PM AND 9 PM EDT...AND AT THE TIME OF LANDFALL. THESE
UPDATES ARE ISSUED UNDER WMO HEADER WTNT63...AND AWIPS HEADER
TCUAT3...AND WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE ON THE NHC WEBSITE. BEGINNING
AT 5 AM EDT TUESDAY...PUBLIC ADVISORIES WILL BE ISSUED BY THE
HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER...HPC...UNDER THE SAME WMO
AND AWIPS HEADERS AS THE NHC PUBLIC ADVISORIES...WHICH WILL ALSO BE

It's not that strange. Once the storm is no longer tropical, it's no longer in the NHC's jurisdiction.

NHC is still covering this simply to maintain continuity in advisories before landfall. Beforehand, we had thought that the storm would move a bit more slowly, but its seems silly to hand this over to HPC just a few hours before landfall--and now only a couple of hours beforehand. They bring up this issue with each advisory just to ensure that there will not be any confusion about where to get information when the transition does occur.

It's no longer a tropical storm so not strange at all. What's unusual is that it stayed tropical as long as it did this time of year. To suggest ulterior motives is, frankly, insulting.

Reporter saying that South St. Seaport/Pier 19 (I think) has water over topping sea wall. That's near Wall St., right? http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/livenow?id=8857235

Don't know about TWC, but here is data from backup sensors at the Battery:

Note, pressure is still dropping as well.

As long as the green line stays above 6, there will be flooding in the subways.

Karen, if you don't mind...could you update that graph like every half hour or so for us to see? the graph I have only goes to 10, yours goes to 12. Very informative and interesting.
