Watching abcnews coverage here on wrdq. Many former new yorkers (like me) here in CFL, so showing that coverage makes sense here.

Either way strongest winds have whipped into the New York/Long island region now just as the models were forecasting andthe surge is really increasing at a rate, such a shame.

12 miles offshore in new vortex just timed at 23:08 UTC

Flipping through coverage. It seems like the consensus it's wrapping up due to landfall.

Salt water rusts. Everything.

very corrosive...I have seen it first hand and it doesnt take long either. Everything will need to be washed with fresh water. The subways have damp air as it is and will aid in the process....

I just timed the rate at a little more than 1/3 foot in ten minutes! At that rate (2 ft/hr) with 90 mins to go 'till high tide, it will go to 14.5 feet or so! Yikes!

There were reports it would cost $55 billion and take AT LEAST a week (if not months) to drain the tubes and clean them up. That was longgg before surge levels started pushing 12 ft.

Confirming what some of you already have posted.

From Tri State Weather:

The "eye" of what was Sandy made landfall...the larger scale gyro is still coming, though.

Its so interesting to look at, I suspect your right, Sandy itself HAS made landfall but the larger ET gyre is still offshore and seems to be tightening around the larger circulation. The models dida good job spotting this as they did have the strongest winds going through NYC around this time.

I think Bryan Norcross and the folks at TWC are being very conservative with the Battery...this is not looking good.

It's not that they're running... Salt water will cause lots of damage to the electrical systems down there... Prob. more than a few days to recover/repair.

Just insane speed of increase!!

Think this thread should be staying here for a while whilst we deal with the fallout of Sandy...I suspect this one won't be far off from Katrina in terms of overall damage.

Hogsweed, thats pretty cool, look at the way the direction shifts as it starts to transition.
