Re: ATL: SANDY - Post-Tropical - Discussion
I'm ready to eat my words, the surge and damage looks extensive. Just the fact the power might take days to come back and is being flooded underground is really bad. The best live feed is at ABC7, some extreme stuff on there:

I heard or read (don't remember at this point) that the Statue of Liberty is built to withstand 130mph winds.

Not sure. The total level is supposed to be a record but Cantore says it's not as high as it was during Irene.
Maybe he is referring to the tide (which is closer to 8 ft now) rather than the 12+ feet of surge...?
ABC7 livestream news said the 1821 record was broken. One foot above the old record - now at 12.54 ft. Surge is described as CAT 3 height.

Either way strongest winds have whipped into the New York/Long island region now just as the models were forecasting andthe surge is really increasing at a rate, such a shame.
The "eye" of what was Sandy made landfall...the larger scale gyro is still coming, though.
Yup, bru. Winds still rising here. Islip, Long Island just had gust to 90mph. My building shook with last gust. Power flickered. I've never had power flicker here in this part of brooklyn where I live now. Very intense.

No, he is clearly remembering the actual level of water reaching the level of the benches next to him. At the cutaway, Brian mentioned the winds at his location were still out of the NE, so maybe they are keeping some surge away from him. Once they swing around, the water could rise very quickly.

Wunderground have added " live tide gauge heights on our wundermap, so you can follow the changes in surge as Sandy roars ashore."

Not according to VDMs which have Sandy approaching Ocean City/Margate City area right now.

NYC Officeof emergency Mgmt is saying on CNN that after an hour the surge and winds will diminish. basically its peaking then it winds down. that can't be true can it?

TWC reporting that the partially collapsed crane has begun to "sway in the wind."

Cantore was confused based on what Norcross was telling him. He corrected himself.

No the surge will stay for awhile, even during low tide...and then it will slowly recede.

Yup. the center is expanding as it is rapidly converting to extra-tropical. There are probably lower pressures well to the northeast of there. This is not tropical anymore. It's like sampling a nor'easter.

Kings Point 12 foot surge at low tide. Expected to rise to 19 feet. Katrina-like levels. Source TWC. Kings Point is at the end of the Long Island Sound funneling of surge.
Cantore still reporting live but surge is inching up behind him.

I think the key word there is peaking...it will slowly wind down after that but its going to be a painfully slow process thats going to take all night at least.
