That statement is just about as bad as saying "Monday will be a regular work day" Sorry, but that made me so angry.

Just a few hours into this and already a dozen or so deaths are known and at least two are missing (swimmer and ship captain). Reports of numerous high water rescues and mayday calls for rescue. Who knows how many are dead and dying from Sandy.

Four million customers w/out power and many hours of high winds still to go.

Massive storm surge flooding breaking all-time records in NYC and other coastal areas.

Wind speeds measured from 70-90 mph in many locations.

A landfalling barometric pressure of 940 mb.

And all of this from a "Cat 1."

I have a feeling Sandy will wind up ranking up there with Katrina, Andrew, Ike, etc. as one of the worst 'canes to ever hit the U.S.

This is pretty bad for NYC, but I'm also a bit more worried about other areas in NJ And CT and other places that haven't had much news. (IE New Orleans vs Gulfport, etc in Katrina)

Can't be overstated how bad things look in coastal NJ, there's going to be a lot of rebuilding (or not) to be done after this one.

Just to add, it was the NY Governor that took charge and shut down MTA.

And I'm sure you're aware that the MTA is an organization governed at the NY State level and not by the City of New York. Bloomberg would not have the authority to shut down all of the trains that run outside of his jurisdiction. The MTA CEO is appointed by the NY governor, and its Board members are are confirmed by the NY State Senate.

Thanks for the info. I was trying to point out the contrast between 2011 and today. Cuomo/Bloomberg were on the same message in 2011. Bloomberg did a 180 this time.

NRC Continues to Monitor Sandy, Including Alert at Oyster Creek Plant

The NRC continues to monitor impacts of Sandy on nuclear power plants in the Northeastern U.S., including an Alert declared at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey. The plant, currently in a regularly scheduled outage, declared the Alert at approximately 8:45 p.m. EDT due to water exceeding certain high water level criteria in the plant’s water intake structure.

An Alert is the second lowest of four NRC action levels. The Alert was preceded by an Unusual Event, declared at approximately 7 p.m., EDT, when the water first reached a minimum high water level criteria. Water level is rising in the intake structure due to a combination of a rising tide, wind direction and storm surge. It is anticipated water levels will begin to abate within the next several hours.
