So have you fellows bought all the ingredients for a good Texas chili? :D Your window for making it is rather short this time round.

Indeed! We will have several days here in the Lone Star State which will make it feel like winter. You know, Screamer, it's too bad we couldn't arrange for a weather exchange program. Most of us would be happy to trade you our 70s and 80s and dry weather for several nice winter storms.

The Grey Goose-filled pro mets at the Portastorm Weather Center are eagerly awaiting the cold front.

I really hope to see a pot of that chili on someone's FB page (and the recipe)! *hint*

Kahlua and coffee also does wonders for the chills you folks are about to experience (though, on second thought, you may want to feel them  )!

and yes I drool over those temps you just posted Portastorm as much as you'd like the snow, without the lower temps that we have here (what you have now are perfect daytime temps TO ME.....as long as there isn't high humidity with them and the nights cool off)

p.s. given Reed Timmer's interest in setting up a home base here to capture our summer storms (ie. tornadoes) I truly do have a vested interest in cooling your State, and the ones surrounding you, off.

I don't want drought here nor do I want your tornadoes!!!! :double:

Based on real-time obs and the latest aviation forecast discussion out of EWX, I'm thinking fropa (frontal passage) will occur in the Austin area around 6-7 p.m. It's not terribly cold upstream yet (Amarillo is reporting 40 degrees but with a strong north wind at 1 p.m.), but the fropa should be dramatic enough to drop us 20-30 degrees in several hours. We'll probably be close to 75 degrees when it arrives.

Edit update: It may actually be sooner than 6-7 p.m. I see at 1:30 pm that the front is on Waco's doorstep.

That's weird. Per the METARs near you which I just looked at (DFW airport, Addison airport, McKinney airport), all are reporting northwest winds gusting up to 20 mph.

Strange. Addison airport is about 5 miles due west of my house. I'll let you know when it flips.

That's strange. Here in Rockwall it's 58 with NW wind near 20.

How does that work, with the nose of cold air down through Kingsville? I know it wouldn't be as cold immediately along the coastline, but why is it warmer farther inland like that?

The coldest air of the season thus far will settle into South Texas Monday and Tuesday nights. Clearing skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall into the 30s in most locations. Across the northern counties, and some southern inland locations, temperatures are forecast to fall to or slightly below the freezing mark.

Nino is done, at least in time to have any significant influence this winter. The SOI crash does indicate MJO convection brewing near the dateline, which is better than not for the PNA ridging if there's to be a chance.

Another good quote from Gary Mcmanus, in case you are following the drought in Oklahoma, since it is also the drought in Texas at least for us here in NTX.

"Huh, it got even drier!

Now, you listen to me! I want trading reopened right now. Get those climatologists back in here! Turn those machines back on!

Sorry Mortimer (obscure "Trading Places" reference), but no can do. The November data from NCDC finally came out and a few rankings changed. The May- November period that we're constantly whining about here on the Ticker was not the second driest on record, it was actually the driest. The statewide average for May-November in Oklahoma was 12.9 inches according to NCDC, which uses a mixture of NWS COOP and Mesonet stations for our state's statistics. Second place now belongs to 1952's May-November average of 13.34 inches.

You've heard us say this before, and the entire Ticker staff has nothing better to do than repeat itself, but beating records from the 1910s, 1930s or 1950s in Oklahoma is NOT someplace you want to find yourself.

And oh by the way, Mother Nature is just messing with us now."

Precip probs through Dec 22nd don't look good either:

wxman57, maybe you should move to oklahoma. Check this out, also from Gary:

"Our quest for the warmest year on record remained intact and 2012 still leads
1954 by by two-tenths of a degree through November, 64.9 degrees to 64.7.
That's not the only period that's gotten into the "warmest on record" act. The last 12, 18 and 24 month periods are also leading the record books (for those looking for the glass half full, it wasn't the warmest, it was the least cold). "

Gary also had this to say

"I also see the AO and NAO starting to trend largely negative over the next 14 days or so. You can sorta see that on these spaghetti plots of the different model forecasts of those two phenomena. Remember, one way to look at it is a negative AO (Arctic Oscillation) can mean the arctic air is available, the negative NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) can mean the pathway for the arctic air to plunge into the U.S. is open. I would not be shocked to see another chiller in a week or two. Depends on how far east it can slide. That's certainly not a done deal. Predicting cold air during the warmest year on record is sort of like predicting rain in a drought. Lotsa luck! "

The wonderful weather in Texarkana right now is nickel/quarter sized hail, high winds, and getting cooler. It has been hailing for about 3-4 minutes now, ground is almost covered. Gotta love it.

Those precip maps are depressing. Honestly, I can't remember the last time it's rained at my house. I don't think it rained in November. If it did, it must've been earlier in the month and not much.

Yeah, so the front came thru and its cooling off. Big deal. I'd rather have rain and 70s than this dryness.
