Our place does. I think most homes in Texas do, but it's not used that often which is a plus on the gas bills compared to up north.

Look what a few days did to the US snow cover. Much better than last year even though extent is not quite there yet. However unlike last year we now have an unbroken wall to wall cover from Canada into the central plains. This is more ideal than the anomalous patches that was the non-winter of 2011-2012 that disintegrated by January.

I don't see the mid and high clouds leaving until early Wednesday morning. Fairly strong upper-level impulse moves across Texas tomorrow. The mid/high clouds should help keep temps up a bit across southeast Texas tonight.

They are definitely working. Winds gusting to around 35 mph here in Houston with a wind advisory. Not a true blue norther though. The sky is still cloudy.

Don't know about a freeze down here. I think the sky will be overcast tonight through Tuesday evening. Hard to freeze down here with a cloudy sky. Can't understand why the NWS is going with a clear sky.

Starting to get breaks in the clouds here. Do you think clouds will build back in thicker tonight?

Looking onward and upward, the GFS operational run for the last several cycles is showing a major high dropping down into the Rockies and Southern Plains right before Christmas. The 12z run has it at 1043mb. That's fairly stout and the model pushes the 0z 850mb isotherm entirely through the state. Something to watch in the days ahead.

Pictures.... Need to taunt wxman57 with pictures.

Oh and it's a nice balmy 53 here in Corpus. Ten degree temp drop since 6 AM.

Anybody know where I can get my hands on the full cfsv2 package? Just wanting to get an early start on my salivation for what will hopefully be a favorable January 2013.

BTW, picked up about a half an inch of wind driven snow last night. snowfall rates were probably near an inch an hour, with 40 mph winds gusts. However, the band moved through very quickly, limiting amounts. Morning low this AM was 11 degrees.

We need rain big time. Some of our baseball practice fields are nothing but dirt right now. You would think we were in the middle of the summer of 2010 with the amount of dryness around here. With fireworks season coming around and low humidity, that is not a good mixture.

Been watching it too Porta...GFS has been rather consistent on bringing a pretty strong front on the weekend before Christmas. Hopefully it stays consistent and not start pushing the front back timing wise.

PS.. My Sister which lives in Denton did not get any snow and she was happy about it lol....Being her first winter in Denton she is going to suffer because she hates the cold!

Here's your link ... and I'm happy you saw some winter weather last night! My son called me around 11:45 pm and said that he and the rest of the kids in his dorm were outside running around in the snow. You could tell the ones who have seen a fair amount of snow as they stayed inside!

There is strong convection in the tropical Pacific as seen by the daily SOI, -48, and -31 yesterday. Perhaps the MJO is preparing for a progression and may be a key player in the weeks ahead.

And I hope you remember this event as THE winter event of 2012-2013. I'm ready for summer. Would much rather have highs near 100 degrees than highs near 50 (like today). BRRR! :cold:

May not have been a blue norther to some, sure tastes like it here in the Metroplex! Maybe we can get gboudx to make us all some gumbo :cheesy:

Enjoy it and your chili/gumbo and your fireplaces!

Am really curious too re do you have furnaces down there (or just heaters?).

What do you mean by furnace? Like wood stoves? If so, the answer is no. Most places around here only have central ac/heat.

Do you know where Joe Bastardi gets his weekly snowfall projections by cfsv2 members? Is it paid for, perhaps?

Those are done by Ryan Maue for weatherbell's site (JB's). It's a premium to use so not sure if we can post from it. Sometimes he tweets them for free which is safer to post just in case.

Edit: I can tell you though that latest the CFSv2 has Texas under some various snow cover several times for the next 45 days north of I-10 at various times.

I hope this happens and there is some moisture with it. I am going to the panhandle (Perryton) for Christmas and I would love for the kids (and who am I kidding I would too) to see a white Christmas. I'm not knowledgeable enough to model hug but I have been forum hugging lately. I have seen the cfsv2 pictures Joe Bastardi has been sending out via Twitter and it looks promising but I am wondering if what the GFS is currently showing is going to be what lays the snow down.

Hmm, well just south (about 10min) in Corinth I had a small dusting on cars. I work in Denton and I saw a little on homes around the UNT campus. Had to look very careful for it. But yes, Denton does tend to be the cold spot around here. Lived in Denton proper for the last 10 years and I have seen it all.
