Bottomed out at 29 degrees at my locale this morning with heavy frost all over the place. This is the coldest morning so far of the early winter season.
Beautiful weather in store today and a nice rebound with highs expected to reach around 65 degrees.

FL Panhandle forecast is now calling for a good chance of bad thunderstorms on Christmas day. You know you're in Florida when they're calling for favorable tornado conditions on Baby Jesus' birthday.
tatement as of 9:48 AM CST on December 23, 2012
... Severe storms possible on Christmas day...
A powerful low pressure system is expected to move across northern
Mississippi and Alabama on Christmas day... bringing a strong cold
front across the area. Unseasonably warm... moist and unstable air
will surge off the Gulf of Mexico and across the deep south ahead of
the front. Your forecasters at the local National Weather Service
office in Mobile see a substantial severe weather threat being
possible across southeast Mississippi... southwest Alabama and the
western-most areas of the Florida Panhandle on Christmas day.
The latest forecast data continues to suggest scattered strong to
severe thunderstorms will develop across the area through the
morning and afternoon hours on Christmas. There is the potential that
these scattered thunderstorms during the day could produce
tornadoes... some of them possibly strong. In addition... large hail
with these storms will be possible.
By late afternoon... a line of thunderstorms will likely form to the west
along the Interstate 59 corridor in Mississippi. That squall line of
thunderstorms will quickly move eastward to be located along the Interstate
65 corridor by early evening... then east of a Brantley/Luverne to
Destin line by late evening. The primary severe weather threat along
the squall line will be damaging straight line winds... large hail and
isolated tornadoes. The threat of severe weather is expected to end
Christmas night as the strong cold front moves through the area.
Stay tuned for further updates on this potentially dangerous weather
situation.

Re: Florida Weather
This wasn't a glancer. I woke up and had to put a 3rd blanket on last night. That only happens on the coldest of winter nights down here. This was a bad one because it followed unusual warmth with lowest winter temperatures.

It was 55 degrees here in Key West when I woke up this morning. Unfortunately, it feels like it's warmed up significantly compared to yesterday. Too bad the cold weather didn't last longer, oh well.

well exactly where you are counts a bunch on a calm, clear night characterized by radiational cooling. i am not sure which obs you are referring to but it looks to me like whitted bottomed out at 52 (seems reasonable since they're right on the water at the southern tip of pinellas) and st pete clearwater fell to 46 which also seems reasonable due to their near water location. you can get big temp variations over a short distance in a set up like that. advection events will yield much more consistent temps. i actually had a touch of frost in an open field near here the day after thanksgiving when the official nearby reporting stations were far warmer. that too was under a similar radiational cooling regime. even though there was no official "frost advisory" for pinellas, long time residents know last night was an ideal night for frost formation in the usual spots (the spine of the county away from water in open areas).

Once the winds died down, the temps rocketed down! It is now 41.9F at 715a. The squall line yesterday produced about 1/4" rain in10 mins, some 30mph gusts and thunder, but not too bad. This is definitely not last year's mild winter. Not too cold, but NOT nearly as mild as last year. So far, these jet stream dips have left the bitterly cold air up north, glancing us in Tampa Bay. For how long?

Re: Florida Weather
Our window for the really cold stuff down here is getting tight. NWS Miami says high sets up over Cuba and Bahamas first week of 2013, keeping us warm.

As a weather enthusiast, the weather down here is really boring. We haven't had any active weather in Miami since Sandy made it's closest approach 2 months ago.

Off and on tropical rains from Fri eve thru this morning, done by 9am, over an inch total. Very nice. Welcomed. Even some thunder. Mild. Then, a cold front for a cold sunday then warming again MOnday. Up and down. Normal. If that high does set up, I'll be thrilled as I hate the cold. I'm off for winter break (teacher) thru the 7th but there has not been much sunshine. January starts without a decent freeze YET.

Re: Florida Weather
It looks like that after tonight and tomorrow it will stay more up in temps for the Peninsula for next week, with the next trough cutting off in the SW & South central US any cold fronts next week will have a tough time making it through the peninsula.

Re: Florida Weather
Unusual 1 day cold front 65* today. Then right back to the same above-average warmth for the week. Really balmy and nice down here so far this winter. Dew point was 72 yesterday in front of the front and almost felt like summer.
Bright sun here today. It's always warm in the sun no matter what temperature down here. The sun feels like the tropic isn't far away.
