Re: NE Winter Storm / Blizzard
With pressure still dropping, couldnt the bands cycle back like they were 2 hours ago and have a convective nature to them by the time the storm ramps up in Boston? I thought 1ET was the peak?
EDIT: Does moisture/instability get robbed once a line goes through an area in winter storms like what we see down here? Same environment or concept? I would think moisture wiith this one isn't an issue. #learnin

TWC Paul Goodloe said that NYC underachieved in snowfall because of warm air aloft that was present for more time than expected.

Jim Cantore at TWC: 400,000+ people without power in New England
Heavy band of snow is back-building into NYC from LI and CT, lets see if this will give some good amounts in the city

Thanks for the site. I live on the north shore of Long Island near Port Jefferson and I measured around 20 inches.

Hey Luis, can you go to the Interactive Weather Map on Intellicast and zoom in on an area of NYC or around there and take a screenshot then post it here? I'm asking because I can't actually view it and I'm curious to see how it is as none of my browsers are allowed to view it (Website stingy). I'm going to upgrade one to view it in the coming days but I won't be able to for this blizzard. Do it whenever tonight during the changeover and heavy snow in New England. Have it on the radar filter with some opacity. Thanks a lot if you can do this!!
This is what you are looking for?

I guess so because it says a upgrade for my browser is needed, so yes . When you come back here early this morning just take a screenshot of whatever is going on and post it. Thanks!
It appears this major blizzard is much more than I thought a day ago before I read the details, this really is a historic blizzard for the NE. Getting hurricane force wind gusts with extremely high snowfall rates is sick. Whatever is going on over there beats whatever I got during the last 6+ years. I'd be livid if I were in NYC right now, they got screwed.
CrazyC83 wrote:The radar shots need to be saved. It looked more like a hurricane making landfall with that incredible band over Long Island and Connecticut...58 dBz is incredible for snow!
I agree, I have never seen the type of radar returns for a winter storm that I have seen with this monster. It did look like a hurricane and its taking on that look. I was using TWN radar to look at it and was floored at what intensity of the mixed prep. and snow was!:
CrazyC83 wrote:Pressure is likely down to about 973mb.
Did you hear a model run tonight shows the same area in like 9 days being under a 959 mb low? I quickly read something like that so no details but if true then .
CNN has been doing near continuous coverage which shows how severe this blizzard is because I don't recall CNN doing this for a winter storm, just hurricanes and Sandy. Now starting at midnight, they have Brook Baldwin doing 5 hours of live coverage all throughout the night!! The first time they did that was Sandy so I was amazed. They still have Chad Myers too in the middle of the night talking with them which is another first...don't recall him being on deck in the middle of the night for Sandy. They're a little too focused on NYC and Boston though.

Here's a radar image showing greens showing up (dbZ in the 30 to 35 range). Impressive!

Re: NE Winter Storm / Blizzard
Here's a nice image from GR2Analyst, showing what is commonly referred to as the "Cone of Silence" above a radar site. The radar doesn't tilt all the way up, so it produces a cone around the site that is void of data. When precipitation is present, it really makes the cone obvious. The image is from NWS Boston's radar (KBOX), using 3D Volume Mode.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

One last image from NWS Boston radar site of the Nor' Easter, as it starts to pull away from the coast. I love the little bands set up to the western and the southern parts of the precip!

Haven't called my parents in NE CT yet, but from what I have seen from photos from friends and various family members, they have snow up to windows and doors. My brother on LI is telling me they have 27 inches, and with no snow blower, it will take several hours to get his driveway cleaned up. Also, have not heard from my sister in Southern New Hampshire yet.
