And with a sustained wind over 40 mph I bet the drifting is brutal

Re: Texas Winter 2012-2013
Triple-threat warnings yesterday from the NWS of
1) Severe storms
2) High winds in excess of 50 mph
3) snow flurries and wind tonight
Their score so far: 0 for 3 here in the East DFW area where I live
1) Severe storms: 0 points ( nothing but the full moon and one little sprinkle)
2) High winds in excess of 50 mph: 0 points (light winds instead from the southwest around 10 mph. Mostly sunny skies right now with very broken stratus-like clouds. It is actually very pleasant outside)
3) snow flurries and wind tonight: As yet undetermined (But this non-storm is going to have to get its act together here to do anything like this)
They really got this wrong this time for us. they got my hopes up for some really exciting weather for nothing. By the way, you guys in the Austin, San Antonio, and other areas to the southwest.....quit sending your Dry-Slots up here....you're killin' our potential chances for exciting weather!

Here is the currrent radar showing the area of nothingness which is most of us south of the Red River. That thin squall line decided to fall apart West of us and reconvene East of us.

Re: Texas Winter 2012-2013
Weather story of the day here in Austin is the wind. American Airlines has cancelled all flights in and out of ABIA after 2 p.m. today. Several thousand homes in south Austin currently without power due to winds knocking down trees knocking down powerlines. Sustained winds here 20-25 mph out of the west with gusts above 40 and some unofficial reports of gusts to near 50 mph.

I wouldn't count myself out yet if I were you. All of that to your West has to go somewhere. I know it is supposed to move NE from where the center currently is, but so far it hasn't decided to move that way. I think it is still further S than originally expected and the turn does not appear to have initiated as of yet, so ??? Winds here in Houston are gusting around 35mph so far with bright sun and 72f.

Well FW NWS got it good here so far. We've gotten rain and expected winds already. For tonight our 20% rain/snow got changed to a 30% snow chance. It's all relative to where you live I guess.

Considering that forecast was for the entire forecast area, they've actually done pretty well so far. I do think the winds have been a little lighter than expected so far though. Other areas are getting pounded with wind though.

Dfw
OTHERWISE...MVFR CIGS ARE EXPECTED TO RETURN TO ALL TAF SITES AS
THE UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM BEGINS TO PULL OFF TO THE EAST AFTER
SUNSET. WE MAY HAVE A BRIEF PERIOD OF LIGHT SNOW AT DFW AREA
AIRPORTS AROUND 06Z...BUT CONFIDENCE IN THIS REMAINS TOO LOW TO
INCLUDE IN THE FORECAST AT THIS TIME. LIGHT SNOW IN STRONG WINDS
WILL LIKELY BRING VSBYS DOWN TO IFR LEVELS WITH THE ONSET OF SNOW.

Nothing that SouthernMet posts, is an official forecast, nor does it reflect views of STORM2K.. SouthernMet is just adding to the great discussions on STORM2K.. Refer to NWS for official forecasts.
Re: Texas Winter 2012-2013
Winds from the west are really doing a number on roof shingles here in NE Austin. I can see shingles flapping like eyelashes on 5 houses (not ours) from our patio. One house has had a section of shingles pulled off... I took pictures but can't upload them to Photobucket because they are doing maintenance (in the middle of the day???)

The wind is taking shingles off houses here, just found some in my yard. It doesn't appear to be from our roof so it must be one of the neighbors.

I don't think we're too far from y'all - we're close to P'ville. The fences are swaying I hope we don't have any fall! I'm sure some in the neighborhood are down though.

I thought about driving NW out towards Amarillo, but there's really nothing fun about driving in a blizzard at all. I love snow, but you've gotta draw the line at 75mph gusts and a 24 hour whiteout.

My brother lives in the Springbrook subdivision in P'ville and says that half of his fence is down and many shingles down on the ground from neighboring houses/roofs. I'm sure that is a common theme throughout much of the Austin-Round Rock-Cedar Park-Pflugerville area.

Besides, you wouldn't get too far. Most of the roads are closed in the entire Panhandle and many in the South Plains.

Exactly - I could have gotten out there pre-blizzard and found a hotel to ride it out in, but good luck getting home... it would turn into a 3 or 4 day vacation. I guess it would have still been a worthwhile trip, if I had paid attention to the long-range forecasts and requested time off from work at least a week ago.

Re: Texas Winter 2012-2013
Update from San Angelo......We had some flurries and sleet around lunch, but its mainly the wind here causing the trouble. Gusts over 60 mph have taken down trees, power lines and fences in several areas of the city.

Good to hear from you, natlib! I see where your local NWSFO placed some counties near San Angelo under a Winter Weather Advisory. Thanks for the report.
