1979-1980 All Female Unused Atlantic Hurricane Naming Lists

#1 Postby Hurricane Jed » Sun May 05, 2013 5:34 pm

As several of you know, in 1971, the Atlantic went to a set of 10 year rotating lists of hurricane names. However before the final two lists were used, the Atlantic Basin went to the 6 year rotating male/female lists. Through much digging and scraping through the internet, I found the final two lists in an old book in my collection. Someone in the forum or chat was wanting to know about these last two lists so I'll post them here for whoever it was. Enjoy :D

1979: Angie, Barbara, Cindy, Dot, Eve, Franny, Gwyn, Hedda, Iris, Judy, Karen, Lana, Molly, Nita, Ophelia, Patty, Roberta, Sherry, Tess, Vesta, Wenda.

1980: Abby, Bertha, Candy, Dinah, Elsie, Felicia, Georgia, Hedy, Isabel, June, Kim, Lucy, Millie, Nina, Olive, Phyllis, Rosie, Suzy, Theda, Violet, Willette.

As you can see some of the names made it onto current naming list in both the Atlantic and EPAC.

Abby, Dot and Franny would have all been retired! Interesting!

Darn, I missed out on my name being used. They should have waited at least another year. Although I was only 7 then, so I'm not sure I would have noticed or not anyway. :P

Actually, come to think of it, maybe I would have, since that particular storm did hit my area.

Lol just messing with you. Barbara, Bertha, Cindy, Felicia, Iris, Isabel, Karen, Lana, Ophelia and Patty all made their way onto one of the three current naming systems in the CPAC, EPAC or North Atlantic.

Tess might end up on one of the lists eventually. Maybe even this year if we get another 19 named storm season and a very destructive Tanya - which wouldn't surprise me since 2010 and 2012 produced late season destructive storms with Tomas and Sandy.

Doubtful. The letters N, O, P, R, S, T, V, W. Only have 8 letters retired between them. V has none, R has 2 and the rest only 1.

Cause its only been recently retired and I usually forget about the more recently retired ones because they aren't really embedded in my memory yet?

this is cool because some of those names are on the lists today and have been retired and could be on the list in the future maybe

Why would you think that?

The only Hedy most Americans would be familiar with is Hedy Lamarr, and she was most definitely a woman:
