Conditions leading up to it were actually very similar. Small compact system, junk convection earlier in the day in the NW left boundaries that these storms thrived on.

Sad news from the area of that strong Tornado:

From CNN

"Kathy Jividen, a spokeswoman for the Hood County, Texas, sheriff's office said there were "multiple fatalities" in the wake of the storm."

It took CNN til 10:53 pm EDT to start live coverage of this severe weather  . There was a report of "100 injuries" near Fort Worth...that is high! Cells still ongoing to this minute!

Much needed reprieve from tornadoes at this hour for North Texas as all tornado warnings have expired. Heavy rain threat (good thing) for many areas as clusters of storms have approached from the NW. Prayers to those hit hard today.

Death toll up to 6 in Grandbury. At least 14 people unaccounted for. More than 100 people hurt, a number of them critically. As per news reports following midnight news conference in Hood County.

FoxNews.com quotes Cleburne mayor as saying a number of homes are damaged in SW Cleburne. No word on injuries there.

Saw several news tweets that said NWS reports at least 10 tornadoes this evening (probably via NWS Chat).

A quick spin up produced a quick, tight circulation around Ennis nearly an hour ago (after midnight). It was tornado warned. First reports were some straight line wind damage. Now I've read at least one tweet that perhaps a tornado touched down. Shows why everybody needs a weather radio!

Terrible evening in North Texas.

@HenryMargusity: News out of areas west of Dallas just keeps getting worse with time. My guess is we had at least an EF3 or greater tornado.

Sounding like EF-4 or even EF-5 damage near Granbury

Pics I've seen this morning from Cleburne are looking more like EF-2 or maybe EF-3 to my untrained eye.

------

@weatherchannel: Aerial footage via @NBCDFW in Granbury, TX disconcerting. Appears to be only a slab foundation remaining on some homes. High-end #damage.

Ugh, dreadful damage. Tornadoes and Hurricanes really don't need more than one to make a season go from ok to bad for a region.

I don't even want to imagine what might've happened if the Granbury cell had formed 35 miles further to the north-east.

If this information is correct, that tornado in Granbury very well could have been an EF-5. That is what happened to Jarrell back in 1998. Homes were swept off the landscape with only cement foundation slabs left and that one was an EF-5. How horrible for those folks. :(

Take a look at the pic and see what you think: EF4 or EF5?

That looks like EF-4 or even EF-3, depending on the structural integrity of the house. It looks awfully small for an 5 given the cars and trees. Also the trees weren't debarked that much and the cars were only flipped, not mangled. Not exactly what I want to see in an EF-5 scene.

From that scene, I'd be hard-pressed to go over low-end EF-4, with high-end EF-3 more likely.

NWS just said preliminary report shows EF-4 damage from Granbury tornado! As per Fort Worth NWS Facebook page.
