GOES-13 is back on full operation
Our Atlantic satellite is out today but they are trying hard to fix the problem as soon as possible. In the meantime GOES-14 will be in service while 13 is fixed.

Re: GOES-13 is out (GOES-14 will provide coverage for now)
Looks like we created the same thread at the same time, Luis. I deleted mine. Word I have from SSEC is that GOES-13 has failed and GOES-14 is being taken out of storage to replace it. Don't know if that means GOES-13 cannot be fixed. Sounds like it might, though.

Anyone hear any mention whether GOES 14 will provide any different/less coverage in either terms of "area", quality of photo, or frequency of pass?

Re: GOES-13 is out (GOES-14 will provide coverage for now)
GOES-14 is the next generation satellite (GOES-O) that was designed to take over for GOES-13 (GOES-N) when GOES-13 ceased to function. Beginning last year, GOES-14 was moved eastward to 75W to be ready to take over for GOES-13 should the need arise. The satellite is slightly more advanced than GOES-13, so there certainly won't be any degradation of service. The next big leap in technology will come with the launch of the next-gen satellite (GOES-R) in 2015 (I hope).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOES_14
Update: That Wikipedia article may be in error about the eastward movement starting last October. The current GOES satellite blog says that GOES-14 is still at 105W. If that's the case, then the satellite would still need to be moved 30 deg east to fully cover the Atlantic Basin. That would take just over a month. Should be fine, as Meteosat would cover the east Atlantic well enough and we don't expect any activity east of the Caribbean in the first month of the season.

Re: GOES-13 is out (GOES-14 will provide coverage for now)
*Update#16: *
GOES-14 is providing GOES-East coverage. GOES-14 product processing and
distribution continues to be nominal. GOES-14 is stationary at 105
degrees West with no current plans to drift east. The imagery has
approached normal tolerance for navigation at an accelerated rate,
which
will allow a return to normal operations ahead of schedule at 0135 UTC
on May 24, 2013. Both Routine and Rapid Scan (RSO) imaging schedules
will be available at that time.
GOES-15 terminated full disk imaging and returned to the routine West
schedule at 1000 UTC on May 23, 2013.
GOES-13 will remain in storage mode while the anomaly is being
investigated. There is no estimate on return to operations at
this time.

The last time -13 went out, they were talking about (and I think started the process) drifting -14 east, into the main spot. They should have drifted it in and held just short, knowing that issues with -13 (it is getting old) were possible, and it could go out at any point. I hope they get this fixed, otherwise we will not have any backups!

Re:
The article may have confused the temporary drift the last time GOES-13 went down as a permanent one, but they returned it to 105 afterwards. From what scuttlebutt I had heard through the grapevine last time, they were initially very worried that 13 was done. Which, from the drift, probably had some truth to it. That they're leaving 14 put for now tells me they think that this is repairable at the moment.wxman57 wrote:GOES-14 is the next generation satellite (GOES-O) that was designed to take over for GOES-13 (GOES-N) when GOES-13 ceased to function. And I am fully in agreement with your parenthetical on GOES-R. I will believe GOES-R is a real thing when it is on a rocket heading into orbit.
They did indeed begin the eastward drift, but reversed it when they got 13 back. Though it may make sense to drift 14 east to better backup 13, they're kind of hamstrung by the fact that 14 is also 15's backup as GOES-West. It may not be nearly as likely, but they still have to cover it. That spot at 105 lets one satellite back up both equally well.brunota2003 wrote:The last time -13 went out, they were talking about (and I think started the process) drifting -14 east, into the main spot. Re: GOES-13 is out (GOES-14 will provide coverage for now)
Let's hope that 13 gets repaired and be operational during the peak of the season arrives because if 14 for some reason goes out -----.
And the next launch of a new satellite will be in 2015.

If 13 is out for good, we have the european satellites, but if both go out its back to the pre satellite era which would cause big problems

Re: GOES-13 is out (GOES-14 will provide coverage for now)
Here is the latest update about GOES-13 and GOES-14. They are doing new tests to GOES-13 after it came out from storage.
Update#17:
GOES-14 is providing GOES-East coverage from its position at 105
degrees
West and is available to provide Rapid Scan Operations as needed.
GOES-East derived products are being successfully generated, with
exception of those that require 30 days of continuous satellite
location. There are no current plans to drift GOES-East from its
current location at 105 degrees West.
GOES-13 remains out of service with no estimate on return to operations
at this time. It was successfully brought out of storage mode for
testing last night, and will be monitored for 24 hours.
GOES-14 will continue to operate as GOES-East while GOES-13 is being
checked out. Root cause investigation continues on the GOES-13
anomaly.
GOES-15 is providing GOES-West coverage.
The GOES satellites will remain in this configuration until further
notice. *

Re: GOES-13 is out (GOES-14 providing coverage for now)
Tests being made to GOES-13
This is good news to see if GOES-13 responds to the tests being done. If all the tests are successful,it will go back to operation on June 5th.
*Update#18: *
GOES-13 recovery efforts continue and the GOES-13 imager and sounder,
located at 75 degrees West, will be turned on today for testing
purposes
ONLY. Reactivation of the instruments will begin at 1900 UTC and
imagery will become available via GVAR by 2200 UTC. GOES-13 will still
be in INR recovery, so imagery is not initially expected to be within
specifications. NESDIS will verify and validate the GOES-13 products
and services over the next several days and also conduct sounder
outgassing procedures to improve the products from the sounder
instrument. If products and services receive a positive review, the
current planning is that they will be made available to users at the
earliest on June 5, 2013. Direct readout users who wish to examine the
data should be aware that the data are for testing purposes only
at this time.
Any feedback direct readout users wish to provide may be

exception of those that require 30 days of continuous satellite
location. There are no current plans to drift GOES-East from its
current location at 105 degrees West.

Re: Breaking News= GOES-13 responding well to tests
GOES-13 doing well in the tests being made
If all continues well,it will be operational on June 5th. Crossing fingers that the worse is over.
*Update#19:*
GOES-14 is providing GOES-East coverage from its position at 105
degrees
West and is available to provide Rapid Scan Operations as needed.
GOES-East derived products are being successfully generated, with
exception of those that require 30 days of continuous satellite
location. There are no current plans to drift GOES-14 from its current
location at 105 degrees West. Due to the location of GOES-14 at a
longitude further West than the nominal GOES-East location, the CONUS
imagery at the top and half of every hour (HH00 UTC and HH30 UTC) does
not capture the Puerto Rico vicinity. To mitigate the situation, those
two CONUS frames will be modified today, effective at 1515 UTC. The
frames are modified in two ways: 1. The eastern edge of the CONUS
frame
will move farther East capturing Puerto Rico at approximately 64
degrees
West and 2. The northern edge of the CONUS frame will move farther
south
near the northern extent of James Bay in Canada at approximately 55
degrees North.
GOES-13 recovery efforts continue as the imager and sounder are
providing data for testing purposes only from 75 degrees West. GOES-13
is still in INR recovery, so imagery is not yet within specifications.
NESDIS will verify and validate the GOES-13 products and services
over
the next several days and also conduct sounder outgassing procedures to
