Good Topic

I agree with pretty much all the names listed in this thread except Sally, Patty, Danny, Fred, Humberto (annoying but not horrible), and Nestor. I would say Olga and Beulah are the top 2 worst or ugly names. Beryl and Christobal are just very annoying names. I would add Ingrid from the Atlantic list, and Octave, Gilma, York, Iselle, Genevieve, Olaf, Miriam, and Sergio from the Epac lists.

Seriously, I am pretty much annoyed. Who agrees?

That pic was my reaction to when Isaac/Emily wasn't retired, Hurricane Carlotta not upgraded to major status, and when all kinds of folks started saying Friday evening that OKC "dodged a bullet" after 3+ touchdowns in the downtown area, massive straight-line winds all over the place (80 mph+), and crushing flooding that hit the city like never before killing people.

BTW, has that ever happened before? I thought the NHC really does not jump the gun when it comes to naming storms to avoid this very problem.

And that is my reaction to the NHC stating, "On an operational level, we determined that TS Barbara did not make it into the GOM with a LLC."

The cool thing about this year's list is that, since there is always a big storm associated with this list, there is always new names showing up every 6 years. So maybe some of the ugly names on this list will be retired and replaced with pretty ones.

LOL! I love how you always go for the crazy names RAJD!

Too bad the WMO would never use some of them.

Thanks so much Ryan! That's because the WMO always will opt for the boring names. Why can't they just open up a bit?

I feel like they were more open to unique names from 1953 - 1978.

I mean...we had:

Anita
Camille
Carmen
Cleo
Dora
Eloise
Fifi
Hattie
Hazel
Hilda
Inez
Ione
Janet

The names they have chosen since modern day have been rather typical at best. I mean, look at every replacement name since 1979:

Alex
Allison
Andrea
Andrew
Bill
Colin
Cristobal
Danny
Dolly
Don
Dorian
Erika
Fabian
Fay
Fernand
Fiona
Franklin
Fred
Gaston
Gonzalo
Gordon
Grace
Hanna
Humberto
Ian
Ida
Igor
Ike
Ingrid
Irma
Isaias
Joaquin
Joyce
Julia
Katia
Kirk
Kyle
Laura
Lee
Lorenzo
Matthew
Melissa
Michelle
Nestor
Olga
Paulette
Rebekah
Rina
Sara
Sean
Tobias
Whitney

Some of them are ordinary, others are divalicious and extraordinary, lol.

Uh, most of the names in the top list were very ordinary to anyone who was an adult in 1953. In 1953 people who were already adult and would have been choosing hurricane names would themselves have been born in the 1920s or before. An American of that generation would almost surely know women named Cleo, Dora, Eloise, Hazel, Hattie, Hilda, and Inez. And Janet was still very common for girls born during the Baby Boom years. Ione is the only name on that list that would have been really unusual back then. So most are nowhere close to being "unique" in the mind of someone who is over 60 years old today.
