ACROSS THE LOCAL ISLANDS. SOME ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS
WERE NOTED EARLY THIS MORNING OVER EASTERN AND NORTHERN PUERTO

WEATHER
Back to yellow for Guadeloupe

Tuesday, July 9, 2013 - 11 h 00

:rarrow: http://www.microsofttranslator.com/bv.a ... 224629.php

Weather the storm-related Chantal require more orange vigilance on the archipelago, but a return to yellow. The wind and the swell will decrease gradually. The rains are not generalized character.

At 5 p.m., the storm tropical Chantal was located about 250 km southwest of Guadeloupe. It is now located in Caribbean and strengthens. It quickly moves to the West-North-West at about 45 mph. Weather the storm-related Chantal require more orange vigilance on the archipelago.
The wind has reached its maximum in the afternoon and will gradually decrease in the evening and the next night 40 to 30 km/h average, direction Southeast. A few gusts to 70 km/h under showers.
The sea is strong and chopped in the Atlantic with average lows having also reached their peak in the afternoon, in a Southeast swell. They still reach 2 m 50 in the evening before decline more during the night.
About rain, they do not generalized character, therefore totals expected are scaled down. However, locally intense showers still cross our islands at least for the next 12 hours.

I hope Gusty will check in when he can. I heard there were some problems in Martinique... fallen trees, damaged electrical cables, roofs damaged, Tropical Storm Chantal apparently did a lot of damage in the south of the island.
The passage of Tropical Storm Chantal near Martinique, with gusts to 120 km / .... 33,000 homes are still without electricity ..... and some heavy squalls in Guadeloupe too I believe...

Guadeloupe has back off the orange alert due to Chantal, and now is on yellow alert. Things have calm down and weather continues to improve :) . Residuals moderate showers and occasionnal line of showers could spread erracticly tonight and tommorow. Important fact, no report of death or damages in the butterfly island.
Recap of the day:

Here are some observations from our Pro Mets of Meteo-France Guadeloupe today when Chantal came closer to us :

Rainfall: 10 to 50 millimeters of water have fallen in 12 hours on Basse-Terre. The eastern part of the island has been really spared, except for the locality of Anse-Bertrand ( 6 millimeters during the last 24h).
Between 4AM and 4PM, Meteo-France reported 20 to 40 mm of rain at Marie-Galante, les Saintes, La Grande-Vigie and on Basse-Terre.

Winds: Between 12AM and 1PM, gusts reached speeds nearing 100 km/hour at Marie-Galante and la Désirade.

For info in the Northern Leewards and given Meteo-France, average winds reached 35 to 45 km/h from an east direction. Gusts have reached values between 54 to 72 km/h.

Sea: No report from Meteo-France Guadeloupe for Guadeloupe... while in Martinica, Meteo-France Martinica reported averaged waves nearing 4meters30, with a maxima reaching 6m90  during mid-day at Basse-Pointe ( Martinica).

As a conclusion, Chantal was pretty kind and compassionate in Guadeloupe... but much more furious in Martinica, bringing numerous damages in the South of the island ( trees down, roofs damaged, impressive power outages, 5000 citizens without power, canceled and delayed fligths).
The season is long and continue with maybe another episodes in store?! Time will tell.
Thanks for all, the support, ( Cycloneye, Artist, Aric, Msbee, etc.) the nice anaysis of all the members (Aric, Ozonepete, etc).
Carib islanders are glad and appreciate the professionnalism of many here. Let's hope that our friends of Martinica will step up strong after Chantal.

Regards

Gustywind :)

Great news there Gusty. :) Here we are dealing with some bands with some gusts but it seems like a big rain event wont occur as Chantal moves far south of us. Maybe the trailing moisture brings more showers but overall, all good in PR.

That's excellent news, i'm glad to see that all is FINE :). Chantal has been a bit shaky for many of us in Guadeloupe... thinking as if we were in September while we're only in July and at the beginning of the month  . Let's see how what's in store during the next couple of days as many twaves continue to race in our direction. Let's wait and see.

Good morning. Only a few bands of showers with some gusts moved thru PR overnight. Weather will turn drier starting on Thursday but we will have to watch for waves next week that may have the chance to develop.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
513 AM AST WED JUL 10 2013

.SYNOPSIS...AT UPPER LEVELS...HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE CARIBBEAN SHIFTS WEST
OVER THE WEEKEND AS A TUTT LOW MOVES OVER THE WATERS JUST NORTH OF
THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND PUERTO RICO. STRONG HIGH PRESSURE THEN
MOVES OVER THE AREA BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND BUILDS.

AT MID LEVELS...HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC SHIFTS
NORTH DURING THE REST OF THE WEEK. LOW PRESSURE IN THE MID
TROPICAL ATLANTIC WILL MOVE OVER THE AREA BY SUNDAY AND CONTINUE
WEST...LEAVING EASTERLY FLOW WITH HIGH PRESSURE TO THE NORTH FOR
THE UPCOMING WEEK.

AT LOWER LEVELS...TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL WAS AT 16.5 NORTH 69.5
WEST AT 5 AM AST AND HAS LEFT THE LOCAL AREA FOR HISPANIOLA.
CHANTAL IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY DISORGANIZED. HIGH PRESSURE OVER
THE WESTERN ATLANTIC WILL GIVE WAY TO A LOW PRESSURE MIGRATING
WEST FROM THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC...AND THIS LOW WILL BE NORTH OF
PUERTO RICO BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THE LOW CONTINUES WEST AND HIGH
PRESSURE REBUILDS OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC DURING THE UPCOMING
WEEK. MODERATE TO STRONG TRADE WIND FLOW WILL CONTINUE OVER THE
LOCAL AREA.

&&

.DISCUSSION...TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL IS MOVING VERY RAPIDLY TO THE
WEST AND PASSED INTO THE MONA CHANNEL EARLY THIS MORNING EVEN
WHILE IT WAS LOSING STRENGTH AND ORGANIZATION. AREAS OF MOISTURE
WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW IT AND MOVE ACROSS THE LOCAL ISLANDS
MAINTAINING THE RISK OF FLOODING IN AREAS THAT RECEIVE THE MOST
RAIN...THEREFORE THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS BEING CONTINUED.
SHOWERS WILL DIMINISH GREATLY AFTER 8 PM AST TONIGHT WITH
SOMEWHAT DRIER AIR MOVING IN. WITH CHANTAL NOW WEST OF THE AREA
THE TROPICAL STORM WATCHES AND WARNINGS HAVE BEEN DROPPED FOR ALL
AREAS EXCEPT IN THE MONA CHANNEL SOUTH OF AGUADILLA AND THE LOCAL
WESTERN CARIBBEAN WATERS. ALTHOUGH CHANTAL IS WEAKENING...THE
WINDS ALOFT ARE STILL RUNNING BETWEEN 30 TO 50 KNOTS...WITH 50
KNOTS AT 17 KFT ACCORDING TO DOPPLER RADAR. THIS MEANS THAT
SHOWERS CAN STILL BRING VERY STRONG GUSTS TO THE SURFACE.
MOISTURE WILL BEGIN DECREASING IMMEDIATELY AS CHANTAL CONTINUES
TO THE WEST NORTHWEST AND DOES SO THROUGH ABOUT SATURDAY. HENCE
SHOWERS WILL ALSO DECREASE TONIGHT AND TOMORROW. THE NAVY NAAPS
MODEL SHOWS A SIGNIFICANT AREA OF DUST MOVING INTO THE AREA ON
THURSDAY AND REMAINING INTO SATURDAY. ALTHOUGH SHOWERS WILL
DIMINISH...IT IS EXPECTED THAT VISIBILITIES WILL FALL BELOW 15
MILES AND MAY FALL BELOW 10 MILES IN AREAS THURSDAY. AFTER
SATURDAY BANDS OF MOISTURE COME THROUGH BEARING SHOWERS WITH THE
BEST MOVING THROUGH ON TUESDAY IN THE FORM OF A TROPICAL WAVE AND
WIND SURGE. ANOTHER BETTER DEFINED TROPICAL WAVE IS SHOWN
APPROACHING THE AREA ON THURSDAY OF NEXT WEEK AND MAY HAVE
POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT.

&&

.AVIATION...SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS SHRA WITH ISOLD TSRA ARE EXPECTED
THROUGH THE DAY...LIKELY AFFECTING THE LOCAL TERMINALS AT TIMES. THE
SHRA/TSRA ACTIVITY CAN CAUSE MVFR OR EVEN BRIEF IFR CONDITIONS.
WINDS WILL BE MAINLY FROM THE EAST AT 10 TO 15 KTS BUT VARIABLE AND
WITH HIGHER GUSTS NEAR THE SHRA/TSRA. CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO
IMPROVE AFTER 10/16Z FOR TIST/TISX AND TKPK/TNCM WHILE PR SHOULD SEE
AN IMPROVEMENT BY 10/20Z. WINDS WILL DECREASE AFTER 10/20Z BUT
REMAIN EASTERLY. WINDS ABOVE THE SURFACE TO 20 KFT RANGE FROM 30
TO 50 KNOTS BUT WILL DIMINISH DURING THE DAY.

&&

.MARINE...SEAS REACHED 12.5 FEET AT THE BUOY SOUTHEAST OF THE
FORECAST AREA AND HAVE FALLEN TO BELOW 8 FEET AS OF 4 AM AST. AT
THE SAINT JOHN BUOY SEAS DID NOT QUITE REACH 7 FEET AND WERE
BELOW 6 FEET BY 5 AM AST. IN PONCE SEAS PEAKED BETWEEN 8 AND 9
FEET AND ARE NOW SUBSIDING. SEAS WILL LIKELY NOT EXCEED 10 FEET
EXCEPT IN ISOLATED AREAS AND CONDITIONS WILL IMPROVE AREA-WIDE
DURING THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. AFTER SEAS SUBSIDE...SMALL CRAFT
ADVISORY CONDITIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED THROUGH BEYOND MONDAY.

Latest news from Martinica.

BALANCE SHEET
Martinique: the storm passed quickly

R.L. Wednesday, July 10, 2013

:rarrow: http://www.microsofttranslator.com/bv.a ... 224893.php

TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. At the bottom of the village, this old building could not resist the onslaught of the storm tropical Chantal. Luckily, no one was inside or outside this House when it is soaring partly.

Tropical storm Chantal, characterized by strong winds, heavy thunderstorm rains and rough seas, has resulted in its wake many falls of trees, blocking roads and cutting up to 50,000 Martinique of electricity. It has not, however, caused major damage.

It was expected since the night before, she not focussed. «Chantal», the first tropical storm of the season, really plagued for two or three hours before continuing its route in Caribbean, to Haiti and Santo Domingo. A lightning passage but nevertheless noticed. In the wake of the centre of the phenomenon located to the South of Martinique, the storm has led dozens of trees falls, yesterday, at the four corners of the island.

Result: many roads were blocked or cut, requiring the intervention of technical services of the regional Council and the general Council. Firefighters have also been mobilized throughout the day. At sea, at Anse Mitan, a family aboard a catamaran, which anchor was unstable, had to be evacuated by the SNSM. Several ships are also found in difficulty in the Bay of marin (rupture of anchor or drift). Yesterday evening, Martinique was ironed in vigilance yellow ("be careful"), indicated weather-France, in its newsletter of 17.05, without excluding, again, heavy rain and thunderstorms until this morning.

On the side of everyday life, «Chantal» passage, which required a level of Hurricane vigilance Orange, has also led to numerous perturbations: several companies closed their doors before the time, oral of the tray was reprofiled to today, Mozaik buses and shuttles Madinina themselves are switched off, airlines have had to shift their flights... At the height of the phenomenon, up to 50 000 Martinique were deprived of electricity.

Yesterday evening, the Martinique Société des eaux informed clients in reason incidents caused on the electrical network, drinking water supply could be disrupted in the following communes: François, Lamentin, Marin, Rivière-Pilote, Rivière-Salée, Holy Spirit, Sainte-Luce, Vauclin. But despite all these uncertainties and concerns of a part of the population not knowing, at any time, if it were to return to his home or remain at work, the storm caused no major damage yesterday.

All of the roads should be reinstated today in the day, as EDF of the last customers subscriptions still deprived of power.

R.L. (France Antilles Martinique)

AT SAINTE-LUCE. This roof, supported by metal frames, took off under the effects of the powerful enough wind, at the level of the seafront of Sainte-Luce, where there are many fishermen and traders. No other major damage

The wind blew on average between 60 and 80 km/h yesterday, with gusts up to 120 km/h on landforms, damaging plantations of bananas, like here in François.

-NUMBER 69

This is the number of interventions made yesterday by firefighters from Martinique. All of rescue centres placed on alert, essentially participated in reconnaissance, signs of dangerous areas - poles on the ground, etc. - and clearances to the chain saw with the roads blocked by trees falling.

Nothing bad occurred in PR with the passage of Chantal to our south. Only some bands of heavy showers with some gusts occurred. By seeing the reports from the islands,it looks like things were not very bad, only some damage in Martinique but the most important thing is no deaths were reported.
