Voted for 6.

One weak storm in the first week.
Another weak storm and a hurricane in week 3.
And two strong storms and a major in the last week.

Ok. So I'm guessing...

Weak storm = Erin
Two strong storms and a hurricane = Fernand/Gabrielle
Two strong storms and a major = Humberto/Ingrid/Jerry

??

I'm voting for 5, I wouldn't be suprised to even see 6! I would expect to see at the most 3 hurricanes with 1-2 of those becoming major hurricanes.

I'd switch Jerry and Ingrid to continue the 'I storms are dangerous' streak with Ingrid as a major

I might be a little conservative, I voted for 4.
My thinking 4 in August, 5 in Sept, 4 in October, 1-2 November.

I say 6 - and we will be up to Lorenzo at the end of August (I accidentally clicked 8)

That distribution I think will include 3 hurricanes and 2 majors:

Tropical Storm Gabrielle
Hurricane Humberto
Major Hurricane Ingrid
Tropical Storm Jerry
Major Hurricane Karen
Tropical Storm Lorenzo

ok!!!!!! Here's what I'm thinking. Here comes... THE AUGUST 2013 HYPOTHESIS SONG!!! :D
Erin, Fernand, the tropical storms
(And I)
I must confess I still believe
When I'm not looking I lose my mind
Gabrielle? Weak tropical storm.
Shout Humberto six more times.
That Humberto, a cat 4
(landfall)
Then Ingrid lands, a cat 5 (cat 5)
I know Jerry's so weak, Karen's not
Karen's a Fabiaaaaaan.
Shout Humberto six more times.

In other words, Erin and Fernand, IMO are going to be veeeery weak tropical storms. (Erin is forming off Canada!) Humberto (he forms about peak time in august) will be some cat 3/4 big storm to make some kinda Irene-esque landfall. Ingrid will be a 5 to come near the gulf coast. jerry is a fish spinner, super weak. Karen will be like fabian of 2003. That's just what I'm thinking for August!! Lorenzo MIGHT come this August if the tropics are really getting active, but this is very unlikely. I vote for 6 storms as well, (but I put 7 in the poll as an accident.)
And can you edit votes on the poll or not?
Who agrees with my hypothesis?

I'm going out on a limb  and say 4, just one a week.

Looks like there's 4 1/2 weeks in August-can we have half a storm?

(By the way-YAY, first post!

I say 7, should really ramp up starting 2nd week of August, could easily see 2 or 3 systems at once.

I voted for five named storms. I think that is a nice figure. The CV wave train is already cranking and we will see some of those develop for sure, and I think we may see a homebrew system as well.

I voted 6 without looking at any other comments first. I thought I'd be on the high side, expecting most people to say 4. Surprised to see 6 right now is the leading answer!

The poll closes on July 31rst so many things can happen with the options being voted. Let's see when it closes which option is ahead. I can say is a close contest in the first hours. :) Welcome to Storm2k Rain Rain Go Away.
