SPECIAL PROBLEM FOR MIAMI-S. FLA. AREA..........

#1 Postby dixiebreeze » Tue Sep 09, 2003 7:30 pm

SOMEONE POINTED OUT (AN EX-SOLDIER AND ANDREW SURVIVOR), IS THAT ALMOST THE ENTIRE BRIGADE OF NATIONAL GUARDSMEN AND RESERVISTS ARE ON EXTENDED DEPLOYMENT TO IRAQ. THAT BRIGADE WAS VITAL, IT WAS NOTED, DURING AND AFTER HURRICANE ANDREW.

SINCE THAT'S TRUE IN MOST AREAS OF THE NATION, I EXPECT DEPLOYMENTS WOULD AFFECT ANY DISASTER OCCURRING ALMOST ANYWHERE.

SOMETHING TO CONTEMPLATE.

All the recipes for a potential disaster are in the works.. Let's see if mother nature averts it..

We were in Miami (not by choice) about a week after Andrew and the National Guard was everywhere. IF Isabel does make US landfall, there could be major ramifications. I know we still have quite a few reservists, etc. but would it be enough to deter looting and other problems associated with a major disaster. Hopefully, this storm will eventually get pushed out to sea but I'm not counting on it.

Current deployment listing:

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Sep2003/d20030903ngr.pdf

shows about 6-700 gone from Miami area / about 2,000 from all of Florida (just rough adding)

Lynn and Steve, I think this could pose major, major problems in the event of a hurricane disaster in that area. It's a point I sure hadn't thought of until now.

Have to wonder if Gov. Jeb is considering this in over all Florida EOC disaster planning. Hope so.

I figure one or more of the 'crats is quite on top of it.

FYI, there's around 84,000 military personnel stationed in Florida including National Guard. Even if half are gone overseas, that's still a bunch of available help. Honestly, they really ought to be able to deploy a large number of bodies with rifles.

This post may be more significant that I thought, given the 11 p.m. NHC discussion.

I do remember reading at the onset of the war in our local paper that just under half would be gone from Florida. I thought to myself that would not be good for cane season if we got a big one. Let's see how all this works out. I know we lost about 250 from our town and just have a skeleton crew left behind. 2/3 of them were MP's.

IF LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IS ALREADY STRETCHED THIN, IT REALLY COULD BECOME A HUGE ISSUE -- IF ISABEL MAKES LANDFALL IN A HEAVILY POPULATED AREA.

Believe me if a disaster occurs they will find the help they need that won't be a problem I am sure.
