Update from Steve himself.
Still a long way from posting on a regular basis, but want to thank each of you for the continuing good thoughts and prayers. And thank Kathy for posting our updates. This is a tough time; brain surgery is very serious with traumatic mental and physical footprints. Slow to recover; slow to find my way back. And both pain and significant emotional steps that set their own pace. Maybe turning a corner of sorts; maybe not yet. No promise of a return to regular and routine posts. One day at a time and nothing more; nothing less. You are all part of where my future begins anew.

Re: Need prayers and positive thoughts for AZskyman-updated 7/30
Things are not as rosy as they were. This update is from July 31. No updates past this that I see.
So much for turning the corner. On Saturday Steve started to spiral down. He developed a spinal fluid leak and has returned to Barrows. The original graft that was placed at the back side of his sinus cavity where the tumor was removed did not take. Yesterday he was taken back into surgery and they used a skin graft from his tummy to replace. However, he has meningitis. According to the neurosurgeon they have caught it early and he is on strong iv antibiotics. He may have to come home with IV home therapy. We are waiting to hear from the infectious disease Dr. as to the course of therapy. Hilight for him today was our son Jarrod arrived. Made Steve's day. On to brighter, healthier days.

Re: Need prayers and positive thoughts for AZskyman-updated 8/7
Another post from Steve. Taken from his FB page today.
Angels. Always thought they could take the shape of ordinary people. Still think they do. Not wispy images floating through our environment, but instead people like you and me brought together by the sands of time; the fate of our days and paths we have crossed together. I'm meeting some on my journey back to better health. Some with stories to tell. Some with common threads of time, space, or interests. Some forlorn and oh so lonely. Eyes with a faint yet persistent sparkle of hope. Metal braces on body parts. None want to hang on this threshold alone. None seeing themselves as a source of light. "just getting through it," they say. Not wanting to be here is an understatement. But we still can learn a lot from those we walk with. Angels? Not in the traditional sense. But inspiring nonetheless. Thanks for your continuing support. Hope you feel mine back your way.

Woke up and checked FB and found these blessings from AZSkyman:
Please continue your prayers and positive thoughts as he recovers and improves.

Fertile soil. I haven't traveled the world, but I have been a lot of places. How many more remains to be seen. Of all the places I have been, few have had such rich loamy soil as northern Illinois. It's a combination that is fertile for growing many things. Properly nurtured, it can bring forth both food and flowers in abundance, unique to so many others places. Our body and mind too can learn and grow even in places that we see as dark and discouraging. There are rich resources all around us. People. Experiences. Perspectives different than our own. Even here in my tiny rehab world this week there are stories of success. Moments that help us keep going. No time for pity parties. Instead time worth learning. And appreciating what we have instead of what we have lost. Have a wonderful weekend, and thank you personally for your continued support.
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware. Hard little pieces of a tabletop puzzle of the U. S. since I was a kid. In therapy this week I got to do that puzzle again. While having a conversation. While standing. A test of my focus. Memory. Ability to multitask. No speed record, but got it done. Not kid stuff any more. Learning about my strengths and limitations. Oh so thankful for all I have. And to be here. Doing puzzles. We all need to count our blessings. Measure what's important in life one piece at a time. Have a good Sunday. Each and every one of you.
Please continue your prayers and positive thoughts as he recovers and improves.

AZSkyman is improving. This is his facebook post from a little while ago.
Steve Steinke
Home is a special place. It' s a little bit about "where," but much more about the feeling that a warm blanket provides on a cold winter's night. A combination of sights. sounds, smells, and security unlike any other. Thank goodness most of us know "home" when we feel it. We have a place to call home. For some going through rehab here, regaining the emotional and physical strength may not be followed by a welcoming next chapter in a setting called home. Instead empty and lonely days. One after another after another. And long, long nights. The longest ever. All of us must forever count home (the feeling) among our most precious of gifts. I'm fortunate for mine. A few more days and I should be there. Have a very good Tuesday.

Re: Need prayers and positive thoughts for AZskyman-updated 8/19
Steve is going home!!
Please continue your prayers and positive thoughts as he continue his recovery at home.A good chunk of summer has rolled on by during my time in hospitals and rehab. Tomorrow they are letting me go home. Combination of good behavior and respectable medical progress. Although I've had my moments, I've tried very hard to stir up a good attitude every day, too. In me and in those around me. One of the few things we can control is our attitude about what comes at us. What is next. What we must confront one on one. This indeed was (is, will be) a challenging time for me and my family. I don't like being the one at the center of attention. I much prefer shining light on others who are much more deserving. The road ahead for ALL of us is unpredictable. But do what you can to make the best of the journey, even when hope seems so far away. Have a wonderful Friday.

Re: Need prayers and positive thoughts for AZskyman-updated 8/22
Steve again. This time filling you in from home. Have been here a few weeks, and aside from being bogged down from a lot of medication, am making progress. Getting around now, even a little driving for short short distances. Feeling stronger each week. I have numerous followup visits with docs. This week it is the vision specialist to see how badly damaged my optic nerve is. The good news, my right eye is near perfect (with glasses). Left eye about 40%. Then huddling with neurosurgeon, ear nose and throat doc who assisted in the tumor removal, and endocrinologist on the 16th to see what other medical or steps are needed. Don't like the fact that my immune system is highly compromised by medication I must take to stay alive. Kind of a major challenge to stay healthy over the long haul. But right now, it's still day to day and week to week. I am fortunate for so much, including the support you have provided to me on a constant basis. Know that I too am hopeful that all your sidetracks in life work out in positive ways. KNOW that I am with you in spirit. My email remains the same if you want to send one my way. Although I retired in April (and then crashed!!), I have a part time job offer waiting for me if I'm interested. Might look at it if the docs don't throw up too many new roadblocks. No significant travel until at least spring of 2014. I don't recommend brain surgery as means of weight loss. I'm gaining some back anyway! Take care and enjoy the fall wherever you are. SO thankful to list you among my friends!
