One of the biggest outbreaks I can remember, it may even reach northern Central America, last time it happened was 2009 I believe.

I think there is a good chance of the Saharan dust making into FL, is already approaching eastern Cuba and The Bahamas this morning.

Look at how gray is the sky in St Barth and in Monsterrat where the Soufriere Volcano is and the same view is in the rest of the Caribbean islands.

How does this compare to the great dust outbreaks of the 80s?

Well the big SAL surge has moved quite a bit west in the Atlantic, now over the Eastern Caribbean.

Now that is moving out, the SAL looks much more broken up and less significant off Africa, a sign the start of the Cape Verde season is nearing...

NOAA satellite have detected a dust plume traveling west from the Sahara Desert.

Using an enhanced version of the NOAA NGAC aerosol model, they have forecasted how the plume is expected to travel across the ocean.

Give it just another week or so and and the SAL will pretty much be dispersed and conditions out in the Tropical Atlantic and off the African coast will become more conducive for the formation of tropical cyclones. August 15 and beyond I feel is when things will get perculating out there, which would be right on schedule for the ramping up of the season anyways.

The haze here has diminished significantly this morning and skies should continue to clear as the day progresses. Yippee! (I can't stand that stuff.)

Anyone know how to get the split window of the SAL for the east coast. The web site doesn't show s.e. coast window.

You can't. I contacted someone at CIMSS last year when the image was reduced to only include as far west as the eastern Caribbean and was told that anything west of there would no longer be available. I don't remember the reason.

The Saharan dust made it all the way to parts of central America. Not sure if it made it to the FL Keys, it looks like it stayed to the south of the Peninsula as it traveled west.

Cancun's web cam this mornning shows some of the haze:

Anybody in south TX to confirm what vis satellite shows this evening of the Saharan dust moving into south TX?
If it is, that's quite a journey the dust has taken.

I'm not sure about Texas but I can confirm we had hazy skies today in El Salvador. Haze is common for us between March and May but it's from our own dust and the smoke produced in the wildfire season.

:uarrow: That sure looks like SAL in the atmosphere, just by looking at the mostly cloud free skies and the very few cumulus clouds not growing in height because of the warm & dry cap.
It also looks hazy.

Here is Brownsville's sounding image loop over the last day and a half, see how the warm & dry cap approaches with time.

The big SAL outbreak has weakened and moved well west but there is still a fairly healthy SAL layer out there as shown by the dark orange/red in this image:

According to the NWS office in Miami we here in S. FL are currently experiencing the SAL outbreak and it's affects. Today was a rare rainless August day all across S. FL with evident haze. Just looking down the street you can see haze. Same is expected for tomorrow too. Monday is when the atmosphere will start moistening up again to a more typical August weather pattern.

The SAL outbreak in S. Fl. is about 2 weeks late then usual ones from the past. Does that mean late hurricane season.
