OSCAT 0813 0447Z pass.
Utor slowed to a snail's pace in the last 2 hours.

Hi:
Florida member here who is in Hong Kong on Business... tropical weather follows me wherever I go!
I have no meteorology to add to this thread, but can anyone tell me what one does in Hong Kong when Typhoon signal 3 is hoisted? Is a visit to the typhoon bar in Wan Chai required? We could have the first ever Storm2K "Global" get together!
Thanks for all the info, guys. Very helpful.

Well I was kinda shocked to see a large major typhoon in the SCS with winds of 100 knots.Utor continues to impress.

GFS forecasts the next storm to hit Okinawa, next name is 'Trami', PAGASA's is 'Maring'. They forecast it have the same intensity with 'Utor', or may be stronger then makes landfall (very strong) at Eastern China.

Thanks, Rob. It's not too bad looking out at Victoria Harbor (I am in a Pacific Place Hotel). Some squalliness, but visibility is not TOO bad in the squalls and, really, the harbor doesn't look too choppy. It's so well protected.
Maybe I will go to the Typhoon Bar and start my own tradition later tonight!
Will look for you on Video/TV.

The GFS Model outlook for Wednesday at 06UTC.

Some of the rain bands on radar, this storm has such a huge field now after it got broke apart of Luzon.

Word here at the hotel is that the HKO is going to hoist signal 8 at 11 PM local. Do I get to go to Wan Chai then, Rob?
By the way--these signals are WAY cooler than the warning system in the states.

I expect signal 8 to be hoisted over night as the winds pick up and persist into tomorrow. The 11:30HKT 7day outlook will be able to determine what HKO is predicting for tomorrow. Becareful of floor to ceiling windows cracking during signal 8 winds!
edit: Latest Bulletin
Code: Select all
Local winds are already generally strong and are expected to strengthen further overnight and tomorrow. The Observatory will consider the local wind changes in assessing the need of issuing the Gale or Storm Signal, No. 8 after midnight.

Re: WPAC: UTOR - Typhoon (Labuyo PAGASA)
Yep. No hoisting at 11...clearly a possibility later tonight. I'm impressed with the system's intensity and structure in less-than-perfect conditions.
Windows are "groaning" a little on the 34th floor, but not as bad as I've dealt with in tropical storms in Florida.
Quite dry though--looks like quite a slug of dry air on the eastern side of the circulation. Lots of space between spiral bands.
