Super Typhoon Maemi (15W) Update 10/21Z

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Sep 10, 2003 4:36 pm

Currently STY Maemi is located at 25.9N 125.4E, or about 145NM SW of Okinawa. Current heading on Maemi is NW at 7kt. Official wind speed is 135g165kt. However, satellite estimates show 140-155kt. In either case... Maemi is big... and doesn't "play nicely with others." ...and by others I mean land. This will definately be something watched closely for Japan, Korea, and neigboring islands. Here's a few select observations from around Maemi:

Miyakojima Island: Wind: 270° 27kt; Pressure: 27.06
Kumejima Island: Vis: 4mi; Weather: Light Rainshowers; Wind: 120° 30g43kt; Pressure: 29.40
Naha: Wind: 130° 20g31kt; Pressure: 29.46
Kadena Air Base: Vis: 5mi; Weather: Mist; Wind: 120° 29g41kt; Pressure: 29.53
Ishigakijima Island: Vis: 1 7/8mi; Weather: Moderate Rainshowers; Wind: 310° 32g47kt; Pressure: 29.13
Shimoji-Shima Island: Vis: 5/8mi; Weather: Heavy Rainshowers; Wind: 360° 50g67kt; Pressure: 29.18

Here's the official 72hr intensity forecast from JTWC as Maemi approaches South Korea:

+00 135g165kt
+12 125g150kt
+24 120g145kt
+36 100g125kt
+48 70g85kt
+72 60g75kt

Oh... I also forgot to mention... while I was looking around for observations near Maemi... I found something odd out of Nago. They were reporting rain and snow/ice pellets at their 59' elevation. Current temperature: 83°F.

I love bogus obs.
