Well I know 2 people who made it through Fabian in Burmuda and were prepped. They were finally able to get net access on Tue and gave a warning. Forget the 1 gallon of water a day. Have at least 2 gallons. Being outside in a humid enviroment without power, cleaning up debris you go through more water. Also candles and lantern's give off more heat then you think and add to misery without power. You will go through more candles then you think too. Another good idea is to have a powdered sports drink mix for the water to get more benifit. Just a few thoughts from someone who was near the eye wall.

Good tips.. We may need them... I hope we don't need them.. But it's gonna get awfully interesting around here in about 96-120 hours when the storm starts getting much closer...

Just got back from the grocery store and saw a guy with a buggy full of 2 1/2 gallon water jugs. Some people are starting to shop but no ~FRENZY~ yet!

Here in the Myrtle Beach area, people seem to be just now taking note of Isabel. This is such a transient area, that I would say the majority have never been through any bad tropical system before. They will wait until the last minute and then all the stores will be empty and a mad house. But hopefully Issy won't come this way at all.
BTW, I am new here and decided to stop lurking and join you all.

Well I have printed off the essentials list and will have a look around my local town tomorrow and start to get some of these items in - apart from anything that the airport authorities might take exception to that is!!! I do not think they would be impressed with knives or scissors in my hand luggage.

ChaserUK.... with all due respect .....WHY do you WANT to be in a hurricane?? I know there is a thrill factor involved, but with a hurricane this size, the thrill doesn't last long before being scared sh*tless kicks in!!

Charleston is right.. Having been through several here in NC I would say that the thrill disappears after being stranded in an area away from home and not being able to leave due to flooding. Or to get to your home and find that there is water damage in 1/3 of your home. Or as my sister and her family had happen, the entire structure of your home blown down, leaving just the flooring.

And all these are from storms nowhere near as strong as Isabel would be at a cat 5.

No, I admire the beauty from afar and will put up with the little ones, but keep the monsters out to sea.

I totally agree with tommedic and CHV! I have been through 6 that did damage in this area, and never evacuated for any of them (worked for a local P.D. and we had to stay). I got caught in hurricane Bonnie when I didn't get back to shelter in time, and it blew the light bar right off the top of my truck and wrapped a down cable around my axle. I don't EVER want to be in that fix again I can assure you!

That's the thing - YOU have been through one (or two or three) but I have not. I admire mother nature totally. To think that out of water vapour and sunlight plus a little of the corrilis affect (spelt wrong I know) these things give out the same energy as a nuke every minute just grips me like I cannot explain. To be there on the beach (at first obviosuly) and know what is coming and watching the cloud formations/ directions/ sea swells etc is just to me something I have to see at some point in my life. Now is as good a time as any. I am not a rubbernecker and I certainly will not be a burden to anyone - I will help as much as I can. But to do that I do need to hook up with people over there. Whatever happens, whatever cat Isabel is when she strikes (IF she does) I will be there.

ChaserUK...I fully understand your passion! BTW....If you plan on staying on the beach long during this possible scenerio, then go ahead and buy yourself a life jacket! Cause you will need it! :o I wish you much luck!

Cheers charleston_hugo_veteran! I was not planning to stay on the beach for too long - just enough to see the beginnings of Isabel (if it happens) but you know why I cant miss this.

chaser, just curious about how you will position yourself to be in the place where this monster decides to come in? Even the weather channel positions several meteorologists in various places to be assured of having someone in the "thick of things". Considering how quickly and widely a hurricanes path can veer (Floyd for one ex.) I was just wondering what your plan is. Oh, and if you do get to the correct area, I wish you much luck! Stay safe!
