If A Cat.5 Storm Hit Houston/Galveston....

#1 Postby Johnny » Thu Sep 11, 2003 11:51 am

I just found a neat video explaining and portraying what would happen if a cat.5 storm hit the Upper Texas Coast.

Having already discussed with my husband what we would do if a Cat3+ headed straight for Houston- none of this really surprised me. But it certainly surprised my parents- who live in the (now suburban) floodplains just outside of Katy.

We've already made plans to rent a moving truck 3-2 days out from any predicted landfall- load up the things we cannot replace (We are the keeper of 4 generations of photographs- about 10,000 all told and out cat!), take some vacation time, and get the hell out of dodge.

My father in law has a lovely spare room for us in San Antonio- and if that's too far south to escape- we'll go to Dallas to be with my grandparents.

There ARE some prepared people- but the number of uninformed and oblivious people is truely staggaring. My entire family has relocated to the Houston area in the last 12 years and never expereinced anything worse than Allison- and most were spared the worst of Allison by living outside the city limits in less affected areas. Even my husbands family, who made it through that 'cane in 83-4 (I forget her name) say they don't really worry aobut a cane hitting the area- they'll just wait it out.

Personally- I see downtown- the glass, the trees, the people, and the development around my home.. and I see the bayou less than a football field away from my second story apartment... and I know deep in my heart that if a cat3+ hits Houston- I'm going to lose everything I don't take with me when I evac.

It's terrifying. And this storm terrifies me. I've had a bad feeling deep in my gut since I say her forming off a CV wave... I won't feel safe untill she's made landfall or been declassed as extratropical.

It would be a disaster no matter where a Cat5 hurricane hits. Just look at what Andrew did and use that as an example.

Is that video real or is it just a video of what could possibly happen?

What COULD happen- a storm of 4-5 intensity has not hit the houston/galveston area since 1900 if I remember correctly (and I may be smoking crack!)

I KNOW none have hit us in the last 15 years. :)

Lindaloo, that is a realistic video on what could happen if a cat.5 storm decided to torcher the Southeast, Texas coast. Looks real, doesn't it? I can rap that video up in one sentence. If a cat.5 storm decided to barrel down on the Southeast, Texas coast......you better run.

I show that video to my jr. high students and it is pretty realistic. It does get your attention doesn't it! I think the Harris/Galveston Co. OEM people produced it a couple of years ago. I went through Alicia while living down at Nassau Bay and I will never stick around again! galvbay

galvbay, I rode Alicia out on the Southwest side of Houston. Pretty wicked weather. She was a cat. 3 but weakened very quickly whe she came aboard but never the less....still a butt whooper. I'm not hanging around for a category 5 storm. I'll be boarding up and hitting the road.
