Super Typhoon Nancy in 1961 was measured to have winds of 185 knots sustained via recon...but many people questioned this and considers it unreliable...

given its current intensity and current forward speed, is it possible for Haiyan to break the record of Cyclone Olivia's 408 kph wind gust...

most of those strong winds from 50s and 60s recon were estimates of flight level winds

I would like to contribute an image of this extremely rare spectacle. Posters are encouraged to share their images from any tropical cyclone imagery website that updates regularly. It is highly possible that we won't see anything like this for another decade or more, so let us share our pictures with those who may not have access to a computer right now.

170 knots - NOTHING TO SAY.
The world record for 1-min winds was Typhoon Nancy in 1961 at 185 knots or 215 mph, but data back then wasn't as reliable as it is presently.
