I'm ashamed to say I just found out about this storm about two hours ago. Life's gotten busy and I pretty much turned off my focus on hurricane season for the year. This is absolutely unbelievable . My thoughts and prayers go out to those poor people. Hopefully we can get some good data and footage from the chasers out there as this could be the strongest storm I see in my lifetime. Needless to say I haven't gotten any work done since about 3pm catching up on Haiyan!

I just have to post in this thread. I readily admit I'm one of those who barely pays attention to the WPAC. I don't normally post at all but this typhoon requires a post. I'm amazed at the near perfection on display by this storm. Anyone who appreciates the forces of nature and the ingredients required to facilitate an almost ideal storm should be aware of it.
And not to mention T&P for those in its path. Hopefully its less impressive on the ground than it is on satellite.

Are there any damage reports and/or meteorological data from Eastern Samar? The eye crossed right over that area.

When would you say that this peaked? I would like to print a life cycle of this amazing typhoon, so I will need to know what image to enlargen on the paper (i.e. its peak).

Its still near peak I think, but it probably stopped intensifying about two hours ago.

This is the most dreadful landfall I have ever witnessed caught on satellite. Here's the image I saw on the Weather Channel, btw they are giving very good coverage on this storm at the :00, :30 and :50 of each hour...don't miss it! I hope everyone in the area have done everything possible to save lives, and I really hope the storm chasers are safe and really know what they're in for if they get the eye of this 195 MPH absolute beast!

The airport weather station in Guiuan stopped reporting at 4:00 AM PHT (about 3 hours ago) with a pressure reading of 977mb and a wind of 96mph. 977mb is a good distance away from the center and the winds were already that strong.

Eye has made landfall on Leyte Island (you can see a little bit of it on the far west side of the eye). City of Tacloban should be getting brunt of the storm right now.

Tacloban City at 22:40 UTC pressure 974 mb, falling 4 mb in 10 minutes. station still operating. winds 61 kts, no gusts reported.

Super Typhoon Haiyan has made landfall. According to PAGASA, Haiyan came ashore at 4 am local time (20 UTC) November 7, 2013 near Guiuan, on the Philippine island of Samar. At the time, Guiuan reported sustained 10-minute average winds of 96 mph, with a pressure of 977 mb. Contact has since been lost with the city. Two hours before landfall, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center assessed Haiyan’s sustained winds at 195 mph, gusting to 235 mph, making it the 4th strongest tropical cyclone in world history. Satellite loops show that Haiyan weakened only slightly, if at all, in the two hours after JTWC’s advisory, so the super typhoon likely made landfall with winds near 195 mph. This makes Haiyan the strongest tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in world history. The previous record was held by the Atlantic's Hurricane Camille of 1969, which made landfall in Mississippi with 190 mph winds.
