radar sat overlays clrealy had the city through the northern eyewall.

Yes. I agree. Though it may not have been measured by any instruments, it looks pretty clear that the most extreme part of the northern eyewall went over Tacloban. I'm sure we'll see damage reports to confirm it.

looked to me on the radar posted several pages earlier that the city itself was literally a half mile or so outside of the eyewall. Maybe on the extreme outer edge

strongest winds likely in Palo

I hope I am not repeating anything here. I apologize if I am. Looking at the radar picture here it looks to me like the most intense part of the eyewall is directly over the city while Palo appears to be in a less intense part of the eyewall, basically in the eye. I do understand though that Palo, based on my assumption, would have gone through that more intense part of the eywall also. Please explain to me how/if I am incorrect in my thoughts.

The strongest winds are usually on the inner edge of the eyewall. Palo, being in the eye, went through those most destructive winds.

That said, a city is not a point, so part of Taclaman likely did get the intense part of the eyewall, especially the southern part.

Looks to be about 105 kt right now. Still to clear all those islands, some with mountains, for about 16 hours and only go down to a Cat 3 is amazing...

It kept hitting the islands for more than 18 hours, so congratulations for still being a Cat3+ storm. lol. Though JTWC keeps it at 135 knots, and they aren't calling it a supertyphoon anymore. Haha.


The rain has stopped here in Manila btw..though right now we are experiencing wind gusts. I heard the winds are even stronger down in Cavite and Lagana provinces. I am just thankful that the metropolitan area was spared by the worst of this supertyphoon. Manila is the capital city but this urbanized jungle is still no match for 170kt winds.

There are no updates coming from Tacloban and Ormoc Leyte. The news anchors sent there couldn't be reached by any means of communication. The footage of the 10-feet storm surge in Tacloban is alarming. The video footage shows the water submerging the second floor of the buildings in Tacloban in less than 30 minutes....props to ABS-CBN for showing us the extent of Haiyan's fury at landfall. Now I'm waiting for James' footage..........

yeah, I just watch the footage from ABS-CBN - it's very scary...
Aerial survey must be available by Sunday - it will help a lot in the preliminary damage assessment.
I won't be surprised to see an entire community completely wiped out, just like what happened with Bopha last year.

I just watched the GMA coverage. 3 are confirmed dead by the nation disaster risk reduction council, BUT the news crew counted bodies not less than 20 being washed away by the storm surge in Leyte. The video is short though because this news just came in. Hopefully tomorrow we can confirm the total number of casualties as well as the damages.
