The early pictures are shocking - one circulating from Ormoc City showed trees debarked, and that is about 50 miles inland...

At least 33 dead as Supertyphoon Yolanda/Haiyan cuts across Central Philippines

This is horrible, and in the next few days Vietnam is going to get blasted by this too to add to the horror

We are being battered by strong winds in Manila. I can hear the roof shaking. Didn't expect this. How about in other areas near Manila?

It looks like the northern eyewall passed south of Tacloban. Not by a lot, but by enough to keep winds there in the cat 1-2 range.

The storm is moving away from Manila now. You're passing through a feeder band.

will find out.. but the surge up in that corner of the bay give the wind direction was likely very high

Even if winds were only Cat 1-2, the storm surge could have easily been up to 20 feet in spots and that would be cataclysmic as well...

ugly scenario unfolding for vietnam with that forecast...

A major surge event could be on tap for Hanoi even with a Cat 1 storm winds. The geometry of that bay would amplify any effect and the Hanoi area is on a low-lying delta. What we're seeing might be only the tip of the iceberg.

hanoi metro has a population of over 6.5 million people...not counting many more millions in other areas...

I do hope these winds will be the last from Haiyan. News reports say the power is down in northern Palawan but that is expected. The attention tomorrow will be on Leyte, latest reports from Palo and Tacloban Leyte are coming iN just now. Will check for news.....

That story does not exist. Taken down perhaps?

I'm not sure what happened to that story, but its' precursor has a lot of video and detail that I haven't seen before. Almost 30 minutes of unique video and first-hand accounts (albeit in languages I've never heard)

I am not a meteorologist, and any posts made by me are not official forecasts or to be interpreted as being intelligent. These posts are just my opinions and are probably silly opinions.

The ACE units for Haiyan so far is 28.1125. Now the WPAC is at 259.257.
