Grayson county OEM telling it like it is.

From jeff:

Arctic air mass is well in place this morning with freezing temperatures roughly from Wharton to Katy to Tomball to Conroe.

Radar indicates increasing returns moving up the coast from S TX and this is being supported by surface observations showing light rain and drizzle around Corpus and Rockport. Interestingly snow flurries have been reported over the northern part of central TX and the Hill Country this morning. Lift will be increasing today across the region as the next impulse from the WSW moves across the state. Expect drizzle and light rain to gradually increase throughout the day. Luckily the temperatures are at their lowest point currently and should rise 2-4 degrees today bringing most of the area above freezing. NW counties from roughly College Station to Huntsville may barely reach 32 today and drizzle/light rain there this afternoon could form into a thin layer of ice. Southward there will likely not be any ice accumulations as surface temperatures hover in the mid to upper 30’s.

For tonight freeze line will move only slightly southward likely reaching a Columbus to Conroe line, so the continued light drizzle and light rain will only potentially be a problem in those areas to the NW of this line. Expect amounts to be generally less than .05 of an inch. Should not see any problems across the Houston metro area.

Cloudy and cold conditions continue into much of next week with highs likely remain below 50 for the next 3-5 days and lows in the 30’s. Bouts of rainfall will cross the area every 12-24 hours as the pattern remains nearly unchanged. Secondary surge of arctic air will arrive on Monday and help keep the area cold…but the good news is that this air does not look as cold as before and should keep the threat for winter precipitation out of the forecast.

Note: Record low maximum for today at IAH is 45 degrees and this will likely fall by several degrees.

Ice/Sleet Accumulation Reports for N TX on Friday:

LITTLE ELM 3.50
HURST 2.50
LINDSAY 2.50
DECATUR 3 SSW 2.25
DENISON 2.00
EDEN 2.00
KELLER 2 E 2.00
BLUFF DALE 1.75
FORT WORTH 1.50
GAINESVILLE 1.50
OAK TRAIL SHORES 1.50
DALLAS 5 E 1.00

Power outages continue to at least 160,000 down from 260,000 yesterday afternoon. Roads remain ice covered and travel significantly impacted. This area will not likely rise above freezing until maybe Monday with little melting until then.

You would think that the guy wanting to be the PWC's new publicist would do better than that! :cheesy:

Funny (but not so funny if you're the one in the middle of it!) Facebook post from a friend of mine who lives in Heath:

"Praise God!!!! We have power!!!! After 29 hours, 2 dog fights, many kid squabbles, but no cold meds.....lol we SURVIVED!
It's only 52 degrees in the house

Indeed! We're very disappointed in our PR staff at the moment. There very well may be an opening at either HQ or our North Texas branch office, working alongside wunderkind Ntxw. The front office may be giving you a call Monday morning.

About the weather ... sitting 27 degrees at the PWC at the moment. Rumors of flurries around but I haven't seen any. There appears to be virga flurries just to our east/southeast on radar.

For those of you wondering "what's next?" in terms of a large system impacting many of us in Texas, it looks like that'll be Friday-Saturday. A fairly potent looking storm system will be rolling through the state then but this time it looks like the majority of the precip for the major urban areas (DFW, Austin, Houston, et al) will be strictly rain. The Panhandle and parts of the South Plains may see a "winter" effect but the rest of us will just enjoy that liquid gold we so badly need.

I'm certain we'll be discussing this system and more in the days ahead.

Aledo should just play on the ice so that the other team has a chance to stay within 20 points of them.

This is why preparation is so important. Many of us here emphasized getting ready for it because it will make going through it much easier and potentially saves money afterwards days before it when the weather was good. Trimming trees, being prepared to stay home for days without power, getting errands done before so you don't become a road hazard. There were far too many arrogant folks and unprepared people (not talking about this board we have great followers!) who not only put themselves in danger but force good people like emergency personnel who have to go out and help them.

Some blame goes on the media who refused to work with what the NWS put out a few days before, all fearing what happened with the thanksgiving week bust. Each storm is different and should be treated as such. Just because it did something doesn't mean it won't do it the next game vice versa.

This is not good ... not good at all. :(

Ntxw, Texas Snowman ... we need to get together and work out a winter weather strategy which brings smiles to the faces of our fellow S2Kers and foils the evil strategies of The Heat Miser/Dark Lord of Summer. He's gaining too much ground.

I totally agree, tried to tell some co workers to get ready and they just laughed, even the big wigs at work were not taking it seriously wed-thur...
i check on my elderly neighbors stay home do not go anywhere and enjoy the time at home and get things done.

there are way too many people that think they are invincible and think nothing will happen to them.
i can drive in that no problem, next thing you know they are in a terrible accident.
they dont have backup plans if they loose power. no extra food in the house ect, no way to cook it.

hopefully some people will learn from this storm and remember and prepare the next time

i think people forget here in texas...it doesn't happen very often

Nothing a little SNOW can't fix Portastorm. Time to bring out those snow guns locked up and aim them at Houston. Texas Snowman and myself are working long hours modifying these wretched models!

Re: Texas Winter 2013-2014

#1680 Postby Portastorm » Sat Dec 07, 2013 11:54 am

I've been talking about this general subject with some people in my office. It is always a bit funny when someone who grew up in climates that saw snow/ice frequently say "oh you Texans are babies. I can drive in that stuff." No ... no you can't drive in that stuff! No one can drive on ice, I don't care where you're from.

I recall a somewhat arrogant twenty-something from northeastern Ohio, back in the 80s, in Austin, who told his girlfriend at the time (now wife) that he could easily move her car off the icy street and into the apartment complex parking lot. Well, he ended up sliding the car into a cement pole and sheepishly walked back into the apartment to explain how badly he screwed up!

When law enforcement officials and local governments plead with people to stay off the roads ... it should be heeded unless it's an emergency. Like Ntxw said earlier, by ignoring that advice you are not only putting yourself and those with you in danger, but others on the road as well, and even emergency personnel who then have to come out in these bad conditions and safe your rear-end.
