This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

When does NOAA jet go out?

#1 Postby WeatherEmperor » Fri Sep 12, 2003 7:58 am

Sorry guys. I havent been paying attention enough. When will the NOAA jet go out to fly the synoptic sampling mission?

P.S- I have always wondered. What do the 00Z, 06Z, 12Z, etc really mean? what times do they stand for?

00z=8:00 PM EDT
6z=2:00 AM EDT
12z=8:00 AM EDT
18z=2:00 PM EDT

Those are the times that the tropical and global models do their runs.

I would add that the "Z" stands for Zulu, the military call letter assigned to that time zone. Zulu time is the same as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Also be aware that UTC does not recognize time shifts such as Daylight Savings Time in the U.S., so the offset when converting to, for example, Eastern Time, will change during the year.
