The Austin NWS site shows 32 degrees and 'unknown precip'......what does that mean? The unknown precip part, that is....

Usually means its a mixture and the ASOS cannot determine the P-type. That must be a report from KATT because KAUS has human observers. KATT has an automated station.

I wonder what some totals are near Toledo Bend lake? That area has been walloped much of the afternoon and evening under heavy reflection along the TX/LA border. I would think they should have gotten at least a couple of inches by now.

It looks like I will be getting a break in the precip soon. Hopefully when it starts up again it's all sleet or snow.

I've been going outside every few minutes & even though the precip is moderate in Killeen, I am unable to determine the P-type. It sounds like sleet but looks like snow. I think it's hybrid precip, like a large ball of ice with edges sticking out of it like a flake. I just know that it hurts when it hits. Feels like a bunch of tiny needles & it's very dry based. It's sliding off stuff, as opposed to sticking to it. & the wind is drifting it.

That sounds like sleet/ice pellets. A good way to determine it is to get in your car, turn the windshield wipers on, and then off. And then watch what hits the windshield. If it's sleet, there will be some moisture around it. If it's ice pellets, you'll hear it dinging. If it's snow, you'll just see the ice crystals. Sounds like you're getting a mixture of ice pellets and sleet.

Because of the fact that this all started as freezing rain, I cannot clear my windshield easily at this point.

Really? It changed completely over for a few minutes, theres a glaze on the railings and steps at my apartment right now. Its calmed down a bit for now though

I'm in south CS, Wellborn area. I don't post much here but I like to keep an eye on the Texas winter weather threads each year. we have been getting a little mix of snow and sleet for almost an hour now. Looks like it's taking a little break now.

Deeper cold air = colder AND drier. This winter weather event is going to be south of Dallas-Ft. Worth because that's where the moisture is located.

NO your Not! At least your getting precipitation, i'd gladly take what your getting right now. It's as dry as my avatar's skin here, and thats not good.

32 degrees in Weimar (Western Colorado County) and light rain. 29 degrees in Schulenburg and light rain ( 8 miles west of Weimar). I-10 is about to get very interesting.
