That sounds like sleet/ice pellets. A good way to determine it is to get in your car, turn the windshield wipers on, and then off. And then watch what hits the windshield. If it's sleet, there will be some moisture around it. If it's ice pellets, you'll hear it dinging. If it's snow, you'll just see the ice crystals. Sounds like you're getting a mixture of ice pellets and sleet.
