Due to the potential for mixed precip. types today, I will use this opportunity to advertise the MPING project, it is a free app you can download for a variety of mobile phone OS to submit precip.type reports. These reports are then mapped (a good opportunity for ground truthing if you assume the public knows the difference between say ice pellets and snow) at this page http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/projects/ping/display/. Also these reports are both used operationally by the NWS (at least I know the Norman branch uses them) to diagnose dominant precip.types, but are also used as reference data to evaluate the hydrometeor classification algorithms employed by radars (currently being worked on in my research group at OU).

So I ask you to please download the app and submit your reports of precip.type today as I know due to the meteorological expertise on this board, these reports will be particularly accurate and useful in future studies.

And yes, that is a 1056mb high middle of this week oozing down. The pattern is quite reminiscent of Feb 2011, system after system, with very similar HP system moving in the same direction.

We got quite a bit so far here in Wichita Falls! I love waking up to this and it is still coming down pretty hard!

Good morning everyone... I'm a little bit southeast of Bridgeport in Paradise and we are getting freezing rain mixed with sleet right now with ice collecting on some branches and blades of grass. Also note I've been hearing numerous reports of accidents in the county as well. Especially in the western and northern parts of the county.

NWS shows 34F for my location in Weatherford but my outside thermometer shows 31F. The drizzle from this morning is frozen on grill and patio furniture.

Will do Porta... I'm about 6 miles southeast of Bridgeport. It sounds like road conditions deteriorate rapidly as you get into Bridgeport. It looks like I'm right on the leading edge of it so I'm sure that will be the case here very shortly as well.

Is there anyone about 10 miles west-northwest of Weatherford that could tell me what it look like out there. It seems like there is very heavy precipitation in the area.

Bowie is going to get nailed, some bright reds are showing up on radar heading there way. If that is snow that's several inches an hour!

Winter storm warning issued for Wise county. Anyone think if they'll issue a warning for Denton county?

Advisory or warning at this point means little, that's mainly for preparation. Just look at the radar. It's not a magic color that gives you more ice or snow .

Here's an update from McCauley:

The winter storm approaches bringing a mix of rain/freezing rain/sleet/snow. Bridges and overpasses here in the Metroplex may get a little icy this afternoon, but as you can see, worse conditions will be to our north and northwest. Although temperatures are already near freezing here in the Metro, the temperatures aloft are running near 50 degrees. So as the rain falls, it will bring down some of this warmth, so do not expect a rapid fall in temperatures. It will all be over in the immediate DFW area before the sun goes down this evening.
