I can't say for sure. What I do know is that the global regime is about to undergo a very dramatic change with the possibility of a very big El Nino. I've told portastorm a few months ago many of us have dreaded drought. But there is the possibility we may be risking flooding the second half of this year. It's Texas it's drought or flood. But that's a long way off all I know for sure is the status quo isn't going to happen.

So do you think there is a decent chance that a large part of Texas could be drought free by the end of 2014? Stronger Nino's typically bring wetter conditions to Texas compared to moderate and weak events, right?

Could be. I know the longer we go without an El Nino the bigger they tend to be when they arrive after being absent. They go from multi billion dollar drought to multi billion dollar flooding that can harm agriculture. Never a nice process when you go to an extreme. Follow this ENSO event closely, when something somewhere has an extreme anomaly there's consequences somewhere else and right now it's the sub-surface of the tropical Pacific.

Some encouraging comments from Steve McCauley re rain:

Signals are starting to get stronger for a significant rain before the month is up, so stay tuned for updates on that.

:uarrow: All of this is super good news!!! So why is it when drought hits, it sticks around for years, and El Nino's tend to be quick, one or two seasons?

Ladies and gents, I have locked the Texas Winter thread and all further discussions about present or future weather will continue here or in the Texas Summer thread. Heck, I'm sure someone will create a Texas Winter 14-15 thread before too long.

:uarrow: We have a long way to go for winter. But I tell you what, this upcoming year is shaping up to be interesting. Just don't want a long, hot, drawn out summer. It will be hot at times but we need a some summer fronts to bring clouds and rain to keep temps down. I remember sitting in the backyard last year in June and July not sweating and enjoying the "cool" breezes. One day in July the high temp was around 74!! Who could forget that!! Fall and winter could be amazing and I am salivating at the prospects of rain and snow. I might not be around as much for spring and summer but will always look here for up to the minute news!! Thanks Storm2K.
Edit: Looks like beginning this weekend some chilly spring weather could persist far into next week.

HA! That nasty, cold, miserable winter is finally over! It's time to start heating up! No more talk of winter precip across Texas. The heat is coming! Three cheers for a long, hot spring, summer and fall!

:uarrow: OR how about a nice cool spring with a cool wet summer transitioning into a cool wet early fall turning in to a cold snowy late fall which would lead into a bitterly cold and snowy winter which would bring single digit temperatures all the way to Houston!! :grrr:  :cold: :froze:

Days till meteorological winter: 256

Days till meteorological fall: 165

Couple of wet summer months here, a few rainy days there and winter will be back before you know it!

And a Bones sighting. We are so blessed.

Technically, it's still Winter until 11:57 CDT. I suspect 57 will have a countdown, ala New Year's Eve, complete with champagne, party hats and his favorite someone special to kiss. :)

Hmm, 11:57 and wxman57. Concindence?

NOAA issues its spring forecast.

http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories201 ... tlook.html

One of the highlights is the temperature forecast for Texas. Was this the same group that predicted such a warm winter east of the Rockies?

I'm loving all this talk of a potentially strong Nino! :D

Medina Lake and Lakes Travis and Buchanan, and Lake Meredith down to West Central Texas, and all lakes in between I fear may need flooding to get them back to normal levels. :double:

We managed some very thick fog at my place this morning and temps dropped low enough for it to freeze on my car. Hope we can get a cool, wet Spring and Summer before what looks like a potentially fun winter next year.

it's funny because at the same time CPC has an El Nino watch. That usually favors cool southern half and southwest warm north. Of course this is their mantra for quite awhile to predict the opposite of what occurs!

In my opinion, no. I think we're in for another drought plagued summer.

On KRLD the other day, the state climatologist said they expect drought conditions to persist through the end of the decade - six more freaking years. Dandy.
