Longest Lived Cat 5 in the ATL
Was Hurricane Dog in 1950.
The storm lasted 60 hours as a CAT 5 storm from 9/5 00z until 9/7 12z (when it weakened to 130 kts-150 mph). At its peak, Dog was at 160 kts for 18 hours (or 185 mph) ...

In 1950, 13 TC's developed, 11 hurricanes, and 8 majors ... two of the 3 hurricanes just missed major status at 95 kts (110 mph) ... Also of note: the first SIX storms achieved major hurricane status and the seventh was a near miss (95kts - 110 mph)

Yep...Dog the longest continuous Cat. 5, while Allen had the most total hours (66):

P.S. Probably a good time to remind those who are unfamilar that the list of hurricane names was initially just the phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, etc.)

During the "quiet" period we had years that produced category 5's in sucessive years
1979-1980
1988-1989
and actually between 1977 - 1980 - 3 of the 4 years produced a category 5.
but after Hugo it was 4 years till Andrew
after Andrew it was 6 years till Mitch
after Mitch it was 5 years till Isabel.
Seeing how warm the tropical Atlantic as a whole is could this the first year since the 1960's to produce multiple Category 5's in a year.

And the newest way to name...
This may start a political firestorm but the funny one is this Texas congressman - oops, congresswoman - no, let's try congresscritter: Sheila Jackson-Lee. She's mad that African-American names are not included in the lists. What's the saying? Can't please all of the people all of the time?

I remember that being brought up before ... caused quite a firestorm so to speak... However, aren't a lot of people, regardless of color or race, represented by hurricane names? ... Ms. Jackson-Lee needs to worry about other more important things, otherwise, she'll likely find herself without a political career soon.
