Do you actually want this beast to land near you?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Good question. I also voted no. Those four need to be careful what they wish for!

Allison was enough...

#7 Postby Steve Cosby » Sat Sep 13, 2003 2:41 pm

I live inland and when we go to Destin or the coast, my wife and I used to wonder what a TS to Cat 1 would be like to be in. We've experienced nasty mid-west weather but we just had some level of interest in what TS's were like.

Well, we no longer feel that way after Allison. My wife and another mother had taken our daughter to a gymnastics camp outside of Huntsville, TX right before Allison got spun up. My wife stayed at Conroe (northern part of Houston) which was reasonably close to the camp (about 45 minutes). As Allison came ashore, she thought, "Oh, cool, I'll get to see what this is like". 24 hours later, she was calling me at home frantic because the water had risen to the point that they were sitting on an island. I-45 was completely shut down and here was our daughter at a camp on a river. It actually got to the point that I was closer to our daughter (7 hours away) than my wife.

After talking with the Sheriff's office for the county where the camp was, we decided to hang tight. My wife could get to a convenience store and a McDonald's for food but that was all. There was 5 feet of water over I-45 200 feet away. They basically sat in their room and listened to the flooding deaths and the tornado reports (at one point there were more than 30 reported tornados at one time in the Houston area according to the local TV met).

Anyway, long story but Allison solved our curiosity about what it would be like to be in a TS. You get the hell out of the way and don't look back. I suspect we are not the only ones to have learned our lesson.

Speaking of which: Anybody got Jim Cantore's travel schedule for next week?

Maybe people could all caravan around behind his TV van so they would be safe.

Obviously, that was a lame attempt at humor: he's bound to get it right some day although I suppose one should not hope something like that on someone else.

Wow - that's a tough one to state correctly. You don't want somebody to get hurt but, then again, he has been trying to be in the eye for years, etc.

Maybe I shoulda just kept the ole mouth shut...
