Yeap, wind gusts 81 mph so far at Cape Lookout.

The last ob I see from Cape Lookout has 71 mph sustained winds with a max gust to 84 mph.

This is a pretty cool site with keeping up with surface obs and other real-time data -- http://tinyurl.com/krtlfnb (zoom in on the storm).

EDIT: 87 mph gust reported near Fort Macon -- "

07/03/2014 M87 MPH CARTERET NC WEATHER FLOW "

Interesting and strange how quiet it is on here with a U.S. landfalling Cat.2 hurricane.

Yeah. The main thread is usually about a page per minute during landfalls!

It's been pretty quiet here in New Bern, thus far anyway. Realizing it's going to get a bit worse, we still got very lucky with the track. Knock wood and good luck to all of those in Arthur's path.

Arthur is the strongest hurricane since Sandy in 2012.

No to take away from the destruction Arthur will cause, but can anyone link any observations to support cat 2?

Is this the earliest landfalling Cat 2 hurricane?

My posts should NEVER, EVER, EVER be construed as an official forecast as I know virtually nada respecting the finer points of meteorology. Consequently, my posts are obviously NOT endorsed by any professional institution or the good folks at storm2k.org. For official information please refer to the weather gurus at the NHC and NWS.

Given 100 mph winds and a movement of 18 mph, the winds might be sustained as low as 82mph directly opposite of the right quadrant which is over water. Now the 100mph winds might be a single spot in the storm, so the odds of something picking that up, unlikely even if this was all over land. Of course in reality, the NHC makes their best educated guess. There might not technically be 100mph sustained winds, but they can't ever wait for something to pick that up, they have to go with what the tools they have.

My radar scope says it happened several minutes ago, no big deal.

Power's out in Morehead. Managed to rig a hot spot for a few. Actually not that bad here at the moment.
